2.0D '06 plate' reverse gear
I am trying to resolve an occasional problem when trying to select reverse gear. When this occurs it fails to engage at all, and requires me to engage first gear and rock the car forward a few times, then reverse will engage. The gear lever goes through the gate, but will not move up into the reverse select position. Once engaged the problem is cured. This seems to be only a problem first thing in the morning, and also only seems to occur after a wet day previously or overnight rain, so I suspect possibly a small amount of corossion on some part of the mechanism, but so sign of anything on top of the gearbox linkage.
The garage has had the car a couple of time but can't find the problem, they say they have checked for the clutch drag problem, but say it is not present on this car, and there is no other tech note from Volvo. The car is now nearing the end of its warantee to I would like to get this sorted. Has anyone else had this problem, or any ideas ????? Last edited by Brian Christie; Sep 23rd, 2008 at 13:15. |

This sounds like a sticking reverse gear solenoid. It's a small electric solenoid plunger I think is mounted on, or near the gate.
It activates when the car is travelling forward to prevent accidentally selecting reverse when driving. rocking the car forward maybe energising the solenoid a couple of time to free it from the crud and/or corrosion. If it is this then should be easy to fix. |
