This is an interesting topic to me as I sometimes get those 'knocking' noises. However, the car was give its MoT yesterday (from my favourite indy who is strict - but a 1st time pass with observation that the front flexi brake hoses will need doing soon) and there was absolutely nothing deemed to be wrong around the rear end suspension. I even asked specifically about rear 'hangers' on the exhaust as they were discussed as a future possible problem last year - but they were still OK.
What I have noticed about my occasional rear 'knocks' is that they are a lot less frequent when the car has gone a couple of miles or so and 'warmed up'. My own next line of investigation will involve looking at the contents of the boot, the fit of the panels and the adjustment of the tailgate fit.

Well, if there are two of us, it can't be an isolated problem.
Let's see what other thoughts may crop up!

Not sure if the knocking was/is the same as I have but no or little knocking when loaded, not problem over speed humps or rocking the car but a lot just after hitting a pot hole or bump in the road.
This turned out to be one of the top mounts split, took ages to find it. which was found after a tip run and the back seats still down. could see the rear floor just behind the rear seats bounce with the knocking. Otherwise would still be looking. |

It sounds like the top mounts. I have replaced mine twice over 180,000 miles

For those that are interested how the rear suspension works read the pic.
Item number 5 the "steering link" or "rear axle link" is the only place the actual suspension is bolted directly to the car and when this wears badly it alters the toe-ing of the rear wheels allowing wander as it is trying to steer the car from the rear. |

Add to that my lack of your magnificent man cave and facilities (I end up working out the front of the flat with, at best, a few very limited tools and a Volvo wheel change jack) and I'm snookered!

Was advised mine were showing signs of ware at service before last, bushes were £114 a side but car had to be 4 wheel aligned when bushed changed. have kept an eye on them and despite towing a tin tent have not noticed any further deterioation. so still not done, was told to watch for uneven tyre ware as first signs of problems. No knocks or thumps heared to date.
