The article also mentions a new 40 series car coming next year, I would guess that it will be yet another SUV/crossover.

Subsequently found this regarding the new V40 from earlier in the year.

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volvo/...-and-sale-date

Suggesting that the new V40 will be very much a crossover, which to me takes it very close to the XC40.

Also of interest in this article from what appears to be July, is what, Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo’s Senior Vice President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa says about a car smaller than a XC40.

"Kerssemakers has also ruled out the notion that Volvo will build a smaller model to sit below its current entry-level 40 range, insisting that the company can achieve its goal of rising from around 650,000 to 800,000 global sales without additional models."

Looks like his Boss has told him otherwise.

I agree. We had two V40s (MY2013 and MY2016) and really liked the car and would have happily accepted a V40 with updated interior and technology.

However when it came to change in 2017, with no new V40 on the horizon and wanting the new interior and technology we ended up with an early new shape XC60. Whilst it is bigger than we need it is a very nice place to be. We looked at an XC40 but were slightly disappointed with the quality of internal materials so we have just replaced it with a new XC60.

We will look at the XC20 in three years when it's time to change again.

Auto Express is the Daily Star of car magazines. I would take this with a pinch of salt and the illustrations even more so. Small cars help reduce car manufacturers fleet CO2 figures however they are also difficult to make decent profits with. If it happens expect it to be built in China rather than EUland. However crosdovers and SUV’s are where its at and the luxury tank end of the market is a huge and highly profitable growth sector across the world. If it generates profits it helps keeps Volvo in business. Whether you or I would buy one is irrelevant. I dislike SUV’s (even though i like driving my sons new RR Sport SVR) and much prefer that endangered species - the estate car.

Looks ok just like all the other ones
I wonder if there will be a choice of red unlike all the other ones

Just lucky and with some maintenance our estates have such longevity

Don't mind volvo making suv''s I just wish they made an updated version of the V70 T5 manual box...or even the AWD R..
Until I can get a manual box I'll continue to run my Awd R and D5. The R owes me nowt, had it 12 years now and can actually invest £2500 a year in repairs...that's what the D5 is standing in depreciation!!!
Cheers Bob

get a decent auto box and they are great. Its the **** poor boxes that give the "auto" a bad name.

the other thing i thought of the other day with these SUVs is putting anythign on the roof such as bikes or canoes. I need to get a roof carrier for the Jag now for our kayak, but its about 30 kilos and not easy to get on the roof so an SUV would be a nightmare.

Good news. Ignore the model for now but the development of a pure electric designed platform is a good thing. The polestar 2 looks like a nice car but it's real world range is seriously hampered by it's build upon the CMA platform. Unfortunately it is likely the pure BEV XC40 will also be a let down in terms of efficiency.

No. They do not make any proper estate cars any more.

An estate car does not have a dog-leg rear tailgate with a severely sloping rear window such that you cannot get a wardrobe in it and close the tailgate.

An estate car does not have a badly engineered platform that forces rear seats to fold down at an angle - not level - such that anything placed on them ends up in the rear cargo area.

Not a single 'estate' car that Volvo has for sale today has 'fold-flat to level' rear seats. None of them has a remotely vertical rear tailgate/window.

The V70 was the last proper estate they made.
