Default September car sales figures

Interesting numbers for September...

A stunning result for PSA/Vauxhall, outselling the Fiesta by 10%.

Great result by Volvo as well - sold more XC40's than the Focus....

1. Vauxhall Corsa: 10,553

2. Ford Fiesta: 9,545

3. Mercedes Benz A-Class: 8,085

4. Volkswagen Polo: 7,417

5. Volkswagen Golf: 6,788

6. Nissan Qashqai: 6,572

7. Ford Puma: 6,341

8. Mini: 6,213

9: Volvo XC40: 5,653

10. Ford Focus: 5,625

That is quite a feat for the XC40, considering all the competitors produce over 2 million vehicles per year and Volvo only just broke the 700,000 mark in for its first time in its entire history!

Has a new Corsa not just been released ? You would expect a bump in sales for a brand new car, the test will be if they can remain up there.

We have a 'Fleet News' weekly email newsletter at work.

The industry reports September new registrations are down 4.4% - that doesn't seem much considering Covid etc but they then go onto say that as far as 'average' new registrations go then this year is down by 15%!

Who's buying all those Corsa's?

Now that we are out and about a bit I have seen a few 20 regs but only one 70.

Where are they?

The new Corsa looks really good, Vauxhall seem to have upped their game a bit.

With regard to registrations being down 4.4% year on year and hence >10% on trending, you've had to expect something like that since the majority of company cars are likely to have done substantially less mileage in the past 6 months and I expect that some will have had their lease extended by 6-12 months accordingly.

Same for private vehicles, many will have done less miles, some families might have decided they need fewer vehicles if more people have been working from home etc. Given all that, you might think the drop is not as high as it could have been.

The other point of view is that the figure will have included some "catch up" from March when showrooms were closed for some of the time. Next March will be telling...

Exactly, and the other factor would be if families are willing to risk financing a major purchase right now. I don't think we've seen the worst of the Covid economic troubles yet; seems like every few days another major employer announces job losses - not the best time to buy that '70' plate motor.

The first time in the top 10 since the 1990s when the 340 was there ..

I don't think people here realise just how well volvos are selling , the salesmen cant cope , they can sell every car they can get their hands on , the two dealers nearest me both sold around 20 cars last weekend alone... and this is how it has gradually been building up for the last 5 years ... new Retail Buildings going up all over the country ... Bristol for one , possible Cardiff too if the rumours are right .

I have to say that the XC40 looks 'just right' among the sea of Nissan SquashPie's out there.

The design looks chunky, stylish, expensive, trendy, strong, high quality. The design team got it right - which is great to see.

FINALLY Volvo's will be seen as cool & desirable.
