I read a description of the SOS module way back. It has its own battery backup, loudspeaker, microphone and antenna so that even if the car suffers a total electrical failure it'll still work. It didn't mention a GPS receiver nor say whether the antenna was for cellular comms only or if it had a GPS aerial too.

I suspect it doesn't have it's own GPS as that would require a GPS receiver (extra cost) and an aerial situated in a favourable position. The SOS module is in the overhead console and that isn't a good place for receiving GPS signals. More likely that it continuously stores the last valid GPS position from the satnav and uses that.

I have just done a battery reset and the car now knows where it is. Let's see how long it lasts, maybe it was just a one off - we will see.....
