I Found this :

instruction_VCC-507117-5.pdf

Item 20 is of interest - but still looks like a PITA to get to.

Is this any different on diesels compared to petrols? Or maybe it's different on cars with 4C suspension? (due to gas bottles..) Never had to remove/replace a fuse on mine but the rear fuse box seems easily accessible..

I had to replace one rear fuse because of air suspension compressor failure.
It seemed quiet a nightmare. It took almost half an hour to the Volvo engineers in tyeh workshop, plenty of tools and knowing the car. Was amazing to see so many car pieces all over the floor before they reached the damn fuse box.

No way to do that on an emergency by the road. I do no t understand the reasons for this design, Volvo considers that fuses will never fail...

In general they would be correct to assume that fuses should never fail. Unless something else major fails, risking melting wires and possibly a fire. My Land Cruiser, as just one example I could quote, has not had a blown fuse in 20 years and 200,000 miles. The last time I had one go was on the Audi Q7 at around 2010, which had a wire short in the seat.

As an aside, air suspension is far too complex and costly long term. Too many compressors, seals, pipes, valves and bags. The price of the bags has reduced over the years but it’s no fun having one go BANG during a journey and the suspension is no more until repaired. It’s not uncommon.

I wonder what car is this about, the fuses in the boot area are not difficult to access in the XC90.
PS: you may add some details of your car to your signature.
