Default Welcome back to my old friend the "sat nav is lost fault"

So it's back.

After my car sat nav knowing where it was for the last 2.5 years it is now lost again.

In reality my car is travelling daily between home (south of Sheffield) to Scunthorpe.

In the car the sat nav thinks it is somewhere near Burton/Tamworth, and just moves randomly around as I drive.

The driving journal on my phone thinks the car is making a series of journeys back and forth north of Gainsborough.

So here are my questions:

- Why? Software or hardware?
- How the hell does the driving journal think the car is one place and the sat nav think it is somewhere else?
- What would happen if I had a crash and the car summoned the emergency services? Where would they go? Where I was, or Burton, or Gainsborough, or even a 4th location?
- I never use the sat nav so wouldn't really mind, apart from it corrupts the speed limit database so the car gives erroneous speed warnings.......

Any help gratefully received.......

You could try taking the battery connection off - hopefully that might reset the system.

Otherwise it could be an issue with the GPS (shark fin) antenna on the roof.

I'd be interested to know how the driving journal gives you location I have days and distance and I can assign to business etc to a journey (which I never have) but doesn't give location?

Just thought this is a total post hijack - sorry

I always found it odd, that the driving console map tells me I am in some Scandinavian county, but the main centre console map is correct to my location.

Driving Journal can only really get the data sent from the car to the app I would have thought.

I am dreading my car going in for it's first year service to have updates done

First try the suggestion of a battry reset then try logging out of VOC and back in, if that does not work try uninstalling VOC app and reinstalling on all devices. I don't know if it will work, just a stab in the dark, but nothing to lose in trying.

Click on driving journal. Click on a journey and you get the stats including a map.

Don't think that it is app related as has gone haywire in the car. Will try a battery reset.

Would be really interested if anyone knows how the emergency locator system works and whether it uses the Satnav GPS. The GPS losing location is reasonably common but if it also runs the post accident locator than it is safety critical rather than just an irritation......

Can't say for certain but I think it has to be GPS. The only potential alternatives I can think of would be inertial guidance or cell tower triangulation. Cars are fitted with only the most basic inertial sensing (eg, it can tell when the car is going round a corner, etc, but not much else) so that would be no good. Cell triangulation isn't particularly accurate and would require extra kit to work out your position. It would also need to see at least 3 towers and this isn't always possible.

When my XC90 satnav showed me sailing down lochs in western Scotland it was eventually diagnosed as a fault with the Vehicle Comms Module. I posted about it ~30 months ago as it took weeks (and two replacement comms modules) to resolve. Other people have reported issues with this module and it's a very expensive part to replace.

Just cleared itself.

Thanks for the info. Agree it will be GPS. What I am not sure is if the SOS module will have it's own GPS or whether it will use the sat nav one......
