Default Cutting Out

Hello
My car has started playing up again.
The car starts fine, runs okay for 10 to 15 minutes then start to lose power, foot on the floor doing 40 really struggles, pull over try to start the car catches runs really rough dies, 3 or 4 goes starts fine then okay for the next 20 miles to work , only does it in the morning. Thought id fixed it by heat shrinking the breather hose from rocker cover to filter housing but started doing it again last week and today. Its as if something has tripped and then its okay.
Cheers
Mark

You have the classic symptoms of carburettor icing up Mark. Firstly make sure the preheater pipe from the air filter to exhaust heatshield is in place. If its ok then the mechanism in the air filter which lifts the flap to block cold air coming in and directs it to the hot air position is probably broken, if so you can repair it by drilling a small hole in the side of the housing, lifting up the flap and putting a self tapper in to hold it up, you can leave this as a permanent repair if you cant buy a new assembly, ideally the flap should pull in cold air in the summer but if you leave it in the winter seting you will never know any different.Carb icing happens gradually and what happens is that the air jet freezes over ,car runs incredibly rich and eventually stops, but as soon as the engine stops the ice melts and car runs fine for a few more miles , hope this helps, Jim.
