I guess it was a similar story to Saab - Volvo were very good at building cars but not profitably so. Ford are kings of cost cutting, volume and marketing so can make money, if not particularly good cars.

An alternative view is the OP bought an eight (8) year old vehicle of unknown provenance. He's unhappy that he's bought an off road, rufty tufty vehicle that may have been used for just that.
Some people appear unhappy at Volvo association with Ford when, at the time, the choice was between FIAT - who wanted Volvocars and Volvotrucks or, Ford who were prepared to pay $6.45bn for cars only. Talks were also held with VW and GM which went no further. So, Ford should have walked and left Volvo to FIAT is the perceived wisdom, 2020 vision. Can't wait for the global fallout of Covid-19 and how Chinese companies will appeal to the global market and what the fallout to subsidiaries will be. Can't possibly harm Volvo. Thank you, Tannaton, for bringing this to our attention !!!

I bought a rufty tufty vehicle to replace an older rufty tufty vehicle of the same model line, I need it to do some occasional rufty tufty work. Yes I bought one at 8 years old with little to no history, against all the best advice, but the flip side was I paid substantially below market value and I have the experience and competence to sort any of the mechanical issues that may be present. I always buy cars this way - with the one proviso that that they bodywork is clean as that's something I can't do. I buy cars that I can add value to, not cars that lose 20% of their value as soon as you leave the forecourt. My point is, which I think I have made clearly, is the standard of design and construction of Ford vehicles is substantially lower than that of Volvo (and probably VAG) to the point that sensible low cost production has fallen into penny pinching, and some of that has bled into Volvo's cars during FoMoCo ownership. How much of that is a criticism of Ford vs a compliment to Volvo is open to interpretation but the average ownership experience differs by a country mile. As the biggest manufacturer by sales in the UK Ford will get the most feedback from customers and dealers than any other, yet they continue to churn out products which are not reliable and have design and manufacturing flaws. They have been and are uniquely positioned to make some of the best cars yet they choose not to, for some reason, probably because they can't deal with other inefficiencies in their organisation. There is a point to ask as to where Volvo would be without a few years of Ford parentage, the same could be said for Jaguar and Aston Martin but it's generally accepted that Ford's PAG venture was a failure, it didn't work, they lived off Volvo R&D and diluted the quality of Volvo products. And relatively speaking it was a long time ago now, if you like pulling statues down of people who did things which in today's world would be considered but back then was what someone else would have just done - this is the motor industry equivalent.

1. Buyers weren't queing around the block to buy Volvocars when it was up for sale late 90's 2. Peeling back the plastic on my 2011 Volvo S60 reveals many FoMoCo stamps which contradicts your view of "the standard of design and construction of Ford vehicles is substantially lower than that of Volvo (and probably VAG) to the point that sensible low cost production has fallen into penny pinching" or, my coming up 10 year old Volvo with lots of Ford in it doesn't exist. What's the point of building a car today that lasts 27 years or whatever ? With the fast moving emissions laws today which currently focus on the exhaust but will not doubt move to brake, tyre and whatever they dream up in the future. Paint anyone ? The red end of the spectrum fades whereas the blue end does so much less noticeably or at a slower rate, paint tax anyone ? My point is owner/maintainer/value adders are very much in the minority. If you can do it good on you. You are in a minority however, the costs of running older vehicles which do not qualify for some historic rebate will become difficult if modern standards are applied to vehicles designed when the standards did not exist. That being the case designing and building for decades to come is impossible when the goalposts are going to move and dead money.

Really, the bottom line is Ford build cars that they don’t want to last forever. They who build cars that last forever don’t sell many cars. I had nothing but Ford once and I had good ones and I had some appalling ones too, it’s the luck of the draw. My V50 was a cracking motor and we did 12k per year in it and yes we has a few issues that comes with an 8yo motor too, but all in all it was good. My V60 CC is built on the same platform as the Mondeo, its rock solid too.
I had a 2010 Mondeo Titanium X Sport estate as a company hack (much to the annoyance of the directors) and it was a quality motor, handled really well even on snow and ice. I think Ford went through a stage where they churned out unimaginative, bland motors of borderline quality. They’re paying for it now, they’ve lost the market share in the UK fleet market to the likes of VAG, Merc etc. I’ve heard that things are starting to sour between Geely and Volvo over the intellectual rights on the cars. That was always going to happen, it’ll be interesting to see where that lands TT

intellectual rights & China ,, interesting concept ,
whatever happens, china will do what china wants, copyrights/patents/ intellectual property are all alien concepts to them as seen time and time again with pretty much everything. same with "certifications", they will put whatever marks /paperwork you Want on a product/part ,, China can and does do Cheap + clone/counterfeit which is sad as they can Also do High Quality, High precision ..
