Default Drivers Seat Back loose?

Hi All...

Our 4 year old XC60 seems to have developed some movement in the front drivers powered seat.. (Normal LuxNAV seats, not the r-Design ones)

The backrest moves about 5mm back on the inner side at the lower joint when you sit in it and put a bit of pressure leaning back, at the joint with the lower frame. Around the position 1 shown in the attached diag.

Only started noticing it when braking and feeling the movement forward.
The outer side is fine (maybe 1mm of movement overall), still there with the seat in different positions.

I removed the seat so I could have a look but nothing seems loose, can't see anything broken. Pax side is manual but doesn't have the problem.

Just wondering if it's a bit of wear in the mechanism, but find it hard after only 4 years.

Don't want to take it to the dealer as they made a right mess of changing the SatNav aerial last time... Might look a local specialist, but if it's not something common, other than getting a replacement seat, not sure how far to take this?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Ah well, just for info, I found the problem..

Removed the seat and had a good look around at the mechanism, plus much googling on parts sites.

There is a service kit for the seat hinge mechanism. Relates to this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-S40-S...2279828?_ul=AR
VOLVO SERVICE KIT FOR SEATBACK WHIPLASH PROTECTION SYSTEM. THESE ARE MADE TO BEND DURING REAR END COLLISION !!

One of them has definitely been bent and can see a stress fracture.. Probably related to the rear end shunt the car had end of last year!! Not something the insurance repair garage decided to check..

Default Drivers seat back loose?

An interesting post. I have a newly aquired imported (Japanese) V70. I have noticed recently that there is slight rearward movment in the drivers seat on acceleration. It is not excessive but has been a bit disconcerting, wondering if something was amiss. So this could be a built-in feature? What are they going to think of next?

It not a new system to help protect against whiplash as it was on the year 2000 V70 I had.

Oh yeah, I'm sure it's the same for a long while, it allows the angle of the seat back to collapse a little on rear impact, but I couldn't find anything searching the internet until I'd had a good look at the mechanism.

There are two part numbers. 31377018 for 'non folding' and 31377019 for the 'folding' passenger seat.

Got a kit now from my local dealer ready to replace, when I feel like removing the seat 'again'.

@electroglidekid did you ever install the part? If so, did it resolve your issue? I'm haveing the same problem with my 2014 XC60 T6 AWD.

My XC60 is now 7 years old and it's happened twice. Fixed under warranty after about a year so I never really questioned it then. Now it has gone again so need to sort it myself.

Default Same symptom but no collision

Our '13 XC60 with 90k exhibiting same symptoms on left hinge of driver seat back though never rear-ended (only front collision). Yet another unreliable component from Volvo. Less trouble with my '99 Acura TL with 250k miles. Dealer wants $1000 to install the repair kit. Will tackle it myself.
Any tips?
