1995 960 24v Auto: computer problems!!!

Is there someone who fixes computer problems?? My transmission light on the dash suddenly starts to flash at any time. Sometimes it goes off all on its own quite quickly and sometimes it takes ages. I know how to read the diagnostics led flashes. It always comes up with the code for 'engine speed sensor'. I can always cancel the flashing light using the standard button pressing procedure but mostly I just let it flash away as there is it makes no difference to the car. It's been doing it for about three years.

Now the lambda light comes on!! Again the code is always the same (camshaft position sensor) and again I can always cancel it using the under bonnet button. Eventually it will come back on again.

I'm concerned of course incase there is a real problem at some time.

I thought there might be somewhere I could send the computer to to have it checked out. Can anyone advise?

I also had the problem of the lambda light coming on, with the associated 'camshaft position sensor' fault code on the underbonnet diagnostic box. The difference with mine was that the engine would cut out when it happened. A couple of events on the M3 had me thinking that my end had come as the engine died in the middle lane with large lorries all around me.

After much discussion with experts I finally sourced the problem myself.

The rubber gasket in the oil filler cap had hardened, and wasn't sealing any more. Oil was leaking out the filler, running down the side of the ignition coil cover, and dripping onto the electrical connection block where the camshaft sensor plugs into the loom, causing a temporary short.

A quick clean out with contact cleaner, and a new rubber gasket, and the problem's gone.

Out of interest I also have a 940, which is Volvo serviced. They replaced the rubber gasket on the oil filler gap at the last service, without me asking. When I asked why, they wouldn't admit to any problems, but just said that it was a 'wise thing to do'.

Thanks George and Matt for your replies.

The fact that I can cancel the fault codes without fixing anything makes me think that there is nothing mechanically wrong with the car. ( I'm not 100% sure of that. I would appreciate some guidance on that assumption)

So I think it seems to point to an electronic/electical fault.
I have checked various connectors and they seem sound.

However I will get hold of a replacement oil filler gasket now as it is letting some oil past it.

I look forward to any more suggestions.

I strongly recommend that you clean the 2 connection blocks at the back of the head out with connector cleaner.

I, too, could cancel the faults, and I pulled the connections apart and re-connected them a couple of times, but it wasn't until I sprayed the connections clean that the problem went away. They were well soaked with oil internally.
