Guys just been reading your thread about the roof rails. Its excactly what I needed to know.

Im picking up a '98 V70 CD on Saturday that has no rails. Volvo have quoted me £400 for putting roof rails on (the ones that go all the way down the car). So Im going to go to the cheaper Thule option - doesnt look anywhere near as slick but the 8K worth of bike on the roof will make up for it.

Check out this link for the Thule option from Halfords:

Bikes?:
Klein Adriot XTR
Klein Adept XTR

Surf?:
9'2 Progressive Longboard
7'2 semi gun
6'4 fish
6'6 pintail

Hello David,

Too late then now, but for anyone else out there try www.roofbox.co.uk. I bought my thule roofbars from there and service is 2nd to none and half the price nearly of anywhere else.

nah it's not too late
i had to get the rails(front to back) first because i want to position the rear BAR further towards the rear of the roof.
Halfords do Thule bars and accessories.
its the volvo rails that needed a deep breath!:-)

I too am thinking about the roof rails (attached down the lenght of the vehicle), £240 + vat seens a little steep, is that for genuine Volvo rails or copies?

how are the fitted? I have a length of rubber down where they should fit, does this come out entirely and the rails fit where the rubber was or does the rubber have to be cut?

Could anyone pass on the details of braydon motors or anywhere else if they are cheeper.

Cheers

Simon

I tried to buy a bike rack from Halfords today but came away with more questions than tubes and straps ... can you answer a few queries before I spend a £100 to learn next week that I bought the wrong thing ...

Car is 94 850 estate - no roof rails, no towbar, no lightboard socket

Options as I see it (this is where you chip in with the insight and experience ...)

Normal (low) mounted rear rack (£65ish) - fine but obscures indicators and number plate - requires light board, socket fitting kit and number plate (+£50ish)

High mounted rear rack (£70ish) - fine but obscures brake lights I imagine with 3 bikes on (or could I get away with it ???) so would require ancillaries as above (+£50ish)

Roof mounted - I have roof mounted kit for the bicycles from my 480T days but the bars dont fit the 850 - new Thule bars from Halfords £100ish and hope the existing kit still fits ... and suffer 2-3mpg down to Cornwall newt week for holiday (£5ish ...)

Any comments / observations / experience on this much appreciated

Dr D
