Default crankshaft seal

I have an oil leak from the crankshaft oil seal on my 1995 850se.how much should I have to spend to have the seal replaced. The car has 170,000 miles on it and Iam wondering if its worth having the job done or just to put up with the leak

1/ Is it the seal leaking or is the engine ventilation system blocked.
2/ Front or back seal. 3/ Front seal not to difficult but replace timing belt at same time, rear seal gearbox out and as its out do the clutch at the same time. Dont know figures for rear seal but friend paid around the 500 mark on a v70 for a clutch, say 125 for clutch parts gives an idea of labour. Add on flywheel removal and fitting oil seal to finish the figure !!! Chers Nigel

Hi all,

I can give you a figure for that. I have just had it done with the cam/aux belts at the same time, it was £800 quid. The bad thing now is i have a leak at the rear end, so i am not too impressed with the dealer as i have already been back once since they ruined my locking wheel nuts.

I am now awaiting another visit to rectify this problem. Also when dropping the gearbox out they have broke the spiget pin on one of the wheels, so one of my brake discs now free wheels when i take my wheel off to clean it !!!! :-((

Hi,
My 98 V70 2.5T had the rear seal replaced, the local dealer reckoned 8 hours labour plus parts including the complete clutch around £800, however I was fortunate and got this done under the warranty.

You are not suggesting the dealer did anything wrong are you Mark!!!!!!. They are experts and always get it right dont they?????
We have just had a similar situation where the dealer replaced a sensor. When the car broke down again it was suggested that a friend had deliberately smashed it EH!!!!!! Yup we all want to be stuck on busy roundabouts on bank holidays . Cheers

Thanks for the advice.I take it figures quoted are for volvo dealers?I won't be using a franchise dealer so I hope it won't be higher than £500.Fingers crossed!

Hi ya,

well i hope finally i had the problems fixed i inherited when having my clutch done. A new spigot pin was replacd by drilling the old one out i guess out of the wheel bearing. The leak was caused by the reverse switch not torqued up correctly. I shall not be visiting this dealer again. :-(

mark.
