Default Air con leak

I purchased a high mileage 850GLT with air con at the end of summer 01 and the aircon was not working. I was able to get the refrigerant recharged via a friend for no cost and the system worked OK for several months before packing up again. Their is obviously a leak somewhere. Anyone any ideas as to where and how to check for a leak. The system must have a cut out which prevents the compressor operating with low refrigerant. Can anyone clarify this.

The bad news is that this is a common Volvo problem. The good news is that there is plenty of advice in the archives of the message board. Check the 700/900 forum as well.

One tip - look for dirty oily-patches.

I think that they put dye in the system and this shows up near the leak but of course you have to pressurise it someway. Cheers Nigel PS you would think that they would put dye in there in the first place wouldnt you for easy diagnosis !!!

If the air con is not used for any length of time or fails, the hoses are no longer lubricated by the refrigerant, which also contains a lubricant.

They dry out, the joints and corners split and when the air con is recharged, all the refrigerant leaks out rapidly.

At best, you'll need some new hoses and sealants, at worst, you'll need a new evaporator which is very expensive.
