Annoying rattle - found!
After years of trying to find the source of this annoying rattle from somewhere underneath, probably at the back, which has been present in several of my cars, I have at last found it.
The two handbrake cables have soft circular cushions where they pass close to the rear of the propeller shaft tunnel. These wear a flat on one side where they rub on the metalwork, eventually ceasing to cushion and instead rattling as the cables flex up and down on bumps. Simply turn them through 180 degrees to present an unworn section of cushion. Also check the spring that holds the two cables where they cross over and stops them knocking against the differential casing. As a bonus, while underneath the car, I discovered the two prop shaft universal joints have removable plugs that can take grease nipples. Either fit nipples permanently, or just screw in a temporary one of the right thread and pump in some grease. It's a pity the sliding joint doesn't appear to have a similar facility. It's amazing what one can find during a leisurely half hour lying under the car just browsing around |
