Default postcode search puzzle

Hi, having recently purchased a 2004 XC90 I asked my local Volvo dealer to tell me if my built-in Sat Nav software was up-to-date and if not what was the cost of an update. I believe that I only have the original 2004 disc installed.

During a general discussion with the service department they told me that regardless of the version of software an update would not give me a postcode search facility.

This surprised me somewhat as my Sat Nav has already got full postcode search, it's detailed in the Sat Nav user manual and I've tried it so I know it's there and that it works.

That surprised them!!

Can anyone clarify, did they misunderstand my question, I know I've got the search function, I'm reluctant to upgrade now in case I loose this function. I'm aware the upgrade is £180.

The upgrade is just the maps not the operating software , if the operating software needs updating it will be on the map disc and be done when the disc is put in ..
The Volvo RTI never had postcode search until around 2003 - 2004 if you have it and it is working it shouldnt disappear ...

I have sat nav in my 2007 XC70, followed inbuilt directions to the nearest Volvo dealer, found that they had closed down some years before, also some roads and junctions had changed up to 3.5 years before. Am going to get a Garmin with speed camara alerts, had a demo, far superior than the Volvo, and half the price of an "upgrade!

When you talk about a postcode search, the Volvo people might have meant a full postcode search where most of the Volvo Sat Nav's just accept 4 out of the 6 digits/letters of a postcode.

Probably just a misunderstanding!

I am not sure why the Volvo system gets so much grief - I find it pretty intuitive to use. Certainly a lot easier than the stupid touch screen system in VW/Audi/SEATs. Although a better "current to destination" scale would be useful - the VW/Audi/SEAT is dynamic with a greater number of increments.
