They say to clear the soot filter you need to go for a 30 to 45 min constant motorway drive at higher RPM then normal (i.e. a lower gear) to allow the car to go through a regeneration cycle.
Please extra load on the engine by turning on as man high load electrical applicances as possible: all lights and the rear window demister (a high load device). The extra load causes a hotter engine which assists in regeneration.

As a side note I keep watching mine wondering when it will regenerate by my engine stays a steady 88 to 89 degrees C. When hot, it'll be 90. It might 'cool' to 87 when travelling downhill.

Agreed, but as I'd just driven for some 60 miles towing a heavy caravan at 60mph with long periods in 4th gear uphill I would have thought it got hot enough to carry out a regeneration!

I regularly do a lengthy motorway journey and have never had DPF problems, unless of course the regeneration process is faulty and particulates have been building up?

Did you get to the bottom of this, I'm getting fumes in the cabin with the window open, only at speeds over 40 ish so definitely through vacuum, just not sure where, no obvious holes.

No Mikey, never did find the cause, it still does it intermittently but I've learned to live with it!

Interestingly I drove 60 miles yesterday in 30 degree heat, sunroof open, never smelt fumes once. Just been down to the local supermarket, sunroof tilted, smell was evident and strongish, I give up!

thanks for the reply, i had a fault code for the map sensor, have changed this and cleared the codes, seems to be better, still there occasionally but thinking maybe it was running rich and amplifying the problem, someone told me maybe the tow bar is causing some kind of turbulence but who knows

Just a thought...I have a different diesel car which has started giving similar symptoms which, in my case, I believe is caused by leakage in the flexible coupling between turbo and dpf/exhaust. Does the XC90 have a flex section and could it be leaking unfiltered fumes into the engine bay well before the normal exhaust point i.e. tailpipe.

This was my original thought months ago, but everything is tight, no leaks or any evidence of exhaust seepage between turbo and dpf including the flexible part.

For me, the "evidence" was that when I opened the bonnet after a 65 mile run to change a light bulb, I couldn't stand over the engine area for the fumes that had built up in the engine bay.
