Default v70 2.4 (140) lack of power/high mpg

Recently, I bought a 2002 plate v70 with the 2.4n/a 140bhp petrol engine.

it seems a bit low on power and a little high on the fuel usage.

I'm getting about 16mpg on urban driving, and around 22mpg on motorways. That's calculated brim to brim - and matches roughly what the computer says.

That's worse than my 3.0 lexus!

There's also a problem where at low speeds - especially reversing around corners/into parking spots where the car stalls as though it's not getting enough fuel.

any ideas where I can start looking for problems? I'm wanting to give the car a full service, but if these symptoms point towards something VERY expensive to fix, I don't want to throw good money after bad.

I've just bought a "streetwize" OBDII reader from EuroCarParts, but not got round to unboxing it yet.

thanks

I have the same engine in my 120,000 mile V70, albeit a 2006 model.

My overall mpg is around 32 by calculation , and about 34 on the trip computor, so it is likely that you have a major issue somewhere.

Without more information it is difficult to diagnose anything, reading any fault cases would be a good start. I am assuming you had have checked for the obvious like fuel leaks, black smoke in the exhaust etc.

Plug your new toy in and let us know any fault codes.
It could be anything, not sure if same on Volvos but temp sensors can cause these faults. Fuel pressure reg. Leaking injector. list goes on.

Hi,

I have a V70 petrol 140 and your mpg does seem low.

An average of 28mpg on country roads light traffic and no city driving.
But as low as 17mpg on short city driving trips
and 35ish on motorways.

This is from the trip never checked brim to brim.

This mpg has never changed since I got the car (in 2006) having now done 170,00mls (total 214,000).

The fact that the trip near enough matches the brim to brim I would discount a leak between tank and engine as the trip gets its info from the injector pump.

I would check the colour of the exhaust (Dark grey) and check for binding brakes (are any wheels hot at the end of a journey?).

Good luck.
Bob

PS you really need the codes read with a reader designed for Volvo codes. See if a fellow member has VADIS or similar near you.

I have a 2002 V70 (140 BHP) on 167k miles. It has always done about 33 MPG on a run (measured at the pump fill to fill).

You don't mention how many miles on it. Automatic ?

These engines don't have the best mpg in city driving.

Given you also have poor motorway mpg, I would first try to improve this one.

I assume air filter is ok

First see if any brake is dragging - lift both front wheels, see how each is turning (the shaft will also spin the transmission so you will feel some resistance). Also lift each rear wheel and spin them - should be very easy to spin by hand

Look at the spark plugs, this is the correct type with 3 or 4 prongs https://www.volvopartshop.com/spark-...nes-1574-p.asp

Test the PCV

Look at the intake air thermostat https://www.volvopartshop.com/spark-...nes-1574-p.asp

Look at the gas filter if the gas tank is the plastic one

May try a drastic coolant system treatment with 2 bottles of Prestone Radiator Flush, I kept it a few weeks during summer time, need to check the reservoir level as this detergent will foam a lot.

For the stall, may have to do with the throttle body which is problematic on a 2002.

changed no.1 lambda sensor and cleared the codes.

went for a 30 mile tootle, and the trip computer is now showing average 20mpg around housing estate, 28mpg on a mixed a-road + villages (10 miles) and 38mpg over 15 miles of motorway (at a steady 58 on the cruise control).

no codes showing, so looks like its sorted.

I'm going to order plugs, filters, and oil and do a quick service now.
