XC90 User opinions & advice
Hi all. I own an 04 S60 D5. Its a wonderful car but it has its shortcomings when trying to squeeze my 3 growing children into the back seat. Its getting to the point where my oldest just cant fit.
So onto the point of my post. I don't want to move away from Volvo and so have been looking at XC90's roughly around the 2010 year. I would appreciate your input as to rear legroom (particularly if you as the driver are over 6ft). I have been reading up quite a bit on the car and have a general idea of what to look for & what to avoid. But again any opinions from owners will be most welcome. From my understanding I should be looking to avoid the earlier 4 speed auto boxes but i believe there are several later auto boxes 5 & 6 speed, is there any difference in reliability in these? Also is it possible to get the E3 engine with a later (not 4 speed) box? Thanks |

The S60 has very little rear legroom with average size adults sitting in front. The V70/XC70 will have an extra 2in space. The XC90 has more leg room on the middle seats but I didn't find it cavernous either, considering the huge exterior dimensions. Need to test especially if the kids are tall teens. Financially speaking, the XC90 is on another level than the S60. Quite more expensive to own

The XC90 is one of the few cars that we can put 3 child safety seats across the middle row.
As a family of 7, we find the car has plenty of space although the boot space is more limiting than the Ford Galaxy which is more flexible. The rear 2 seats take our 10 and 13-year-old daughters and they are comfortable on long journeys, my wife has sat in the 3rd row also, as have I, and it is slightly cramped for an adult. Fine for short trips though. I think you will find there is plenty of space - I have just flattened all the seats and carried a complete captain's bed inside with a mattress no problem. Agree on the ownership costs though as tax is a lot before you look at fuel economy and maintenance costs. Nigel. |

Don't think the XC90 ever came with a 4 speed box just the 5 and 6 depending upon age.

The T6 variant (Euro 4) was equipped with a 4-speed General Motors gearbox.
Its issues in the XC90 application are well documented on this forum. Everything else had 5- or 6-speed transmissions.

Assuming you want a diesel, it is only five or six speed:
163hp / begin to MY05 / 5-speed / Euro3 185hp / MY06 to MY10 / 6-speed / Euro4 200hp / MY11 to MY14 / 6-speed / Euro5 If you're interested, I can take some pictures, drivers seat fitted for my 1.9m and afterwards sitting behind that drivers seat with 1.9m

At 2010 year and later you're into the E4 & E5 cars, the E3's were ceased in MY2005, along with the 5-speed gearboxes. Everything after that had the same TF-80 6-speed auto, all diesel and petrol models. Manuals had a Volvo 6 speed gearbox on all years.
