Default Rear bump stops.

Daughter’s XC70. 2010my. D5. AWD. 129,000 miles.
Rear bump stops disintegrating at the bottom. Appears that the coil springs have to be compressed and removed to access the bump stops.
Anyone ever renewed the bump stops?

Appears that no one has ever had this problem. Haynes doesn’t help as the instructions for removing the rear springs seem to have a typo as they refer to the rear wheels being chocked prior to jacking up the front.

Lots of XC70 have Nivomat in the rear and self-levelling suspension and no springs. I thought it was standard on XC70s. Maybe that's why there's no other answer.

Had this on my XC60.

It was caused by where I parked the car, which was on level concrete but to get there whether you reversed in or drove in one of the rear wheels almost came off the ground and the other was fully compressed. Had them changed by the dealer when it was in doing the rear bushes.

No idea on price at the moment but can sort the invoice out in the morning.

Default Update.

I was very surprised and not a little disappointed to find that our XC70 was not fitted with Nivomat shocks. Apparently it is an option to be specified when the vehicle is first ordered. I thought that a vehicle such as this would have been fitted with them as standard, but unfortunately not. Shortly after daughter bought the car I persuaded the main dealer to provide us with a print out of the Vehicle Details Variant Attributes for our particular VIN. It's 11 pages of what the car is, or is not, fitted with. A look underneath easily confirmed that there are no Nivomats fitted.
I have managed to find a YouTube video showing how to replace the rear spring on a 2010 V70. The suspension appears to be identical to that on our XC70 and it is a pleasant surprise to see that it is simply a matter of detaching the lower suspension arm from the hub carrier and pushing it down to release the spring. Eight minutes into the video it can be seen that the bump stop is detached from the upper mounting and later is attached to the new upper mounting, so there is the answer.

The above link should be the video I have mentioned.
Thanks to Dave, Laird Scooby for the "how to" to link stuff.

The video that Ian21401 posted above shows the job in more detail on a car that doesn't have Nivomat suspension. Have a look at that

Hi Ian, I replaced both rear coil springs on my XC70 2013 last year, easy job just jack up the car so wheels are hanging, release the the bottom arm and the spring should just pull out. Pay to get the alinements check after.
Job took just over an hour taking it easy while doing the work.

My XC70 bump stops were an "advisory" at the last MOT - "Rear bump stops poor" - I'll have new ones fitted at the next service - when I can get there!

Default Revisiting Bump Stops.

I’ve just had the rear wheels off the XC70 to check the rear brake pads for wear. I found that the lower end of the offside bump stop has broken up and become detached. A check of various sites reveals that they are known as either “Bump Rubbers” or “Helper Springs” and there are three different part numbers.
I’ve contacted my local dealer. Their database shows that our car should be fitted with “Helper Spring” part no. 31277310 which is one of the three numbers I had found so I have ordered two of them.
I wonder if, when I come to fit them, it is possible to squeeze them between the spring coils so that I do not have to detach the lower suspension arm and spring. Probably not, that would be too easy. Time will tell.
