2007 XC90 Rear suspension issue

This car rear suspension bushing and shock absorber were changed, after fixing everything back, the car back is no more stable, formerly two bushings were bad inside, and two shocks were leaking, now that all this items have been replace, the car back swings whenever you pass uneven road, this is the second car I have seen behaving like this, the other one only shock was changed and the back start swinging..

Please what is the remedy for this issue, other mechanic are advising to get second hand complete axle fix rather than changing the things in the old one. Please help

Hmmm... think you should probably start with a new mechanic? Recommending a whole new axle, without any specific diagnosis, is "poke and hope". The only guarantee is it will further empty your bank account.

Hello, I have a 2006 xc90 D5 hive been told my rear bushes need to be replaced, the local garage seem reluctant to take it on, how difficult is it to do at home on ramps.

I had similar on my new to me 2004 xc90.
Car had just had new shocks and springs prior to me purchasing.
Never noticed any problems on the test drive but after a week or so I would get a violent lurch from the rear over an uneven road.

I checked the bushings for the front and rear and all looked ok so I ruled those out.
Had my dad jump up and down on the towbar to see if i could hear a knock or see what was moving with weight/ movement on it
Narrowed it down to the passenger rear shock. Whoever did the work previous hadnt tightened the shock top nut and it had disappeared altogether leaving the rear shock attached to nothing at the top. A new nut solved the issue so it is worth checking that.

It depends on which bush you are talking about. I recently replaced the top bushes on my 2005 while lying in the drive.

It was a bit of a bugger, but I managed.

Like the original poster, a previous garage didn't really want to touch them and a whole rear sub-frame was suggested as the solution, due to the corrosion.

Shock absorbers should be changed in pairs, both on the axle at the same time, if the other shock has likely failed also.

I had the exact same issue on my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso where it would swing/skip violently to the side when I was going straight and going over uneven ground- especially 60mph ish. It was so bad it was genuinely frightening. Checked all the rear bushes- nothing and car passed all MOTs with no rear problems/advisories etc. Roll on a year and I was going round a left hand corner and I clearly felt something move on the front right suspension. Checked all the ball joints in normal manner- nothing. So I thought my car had maybe slid on a bit of mud/leaves when I'd went round the corner. Next day, exact same corner, something moved again on the front right suspension. So I checked it again and really jacked up the wheel so I could really get a hold of the bottom of the wheel and pulled outward- and the lower balljoint moved. It had next to no vertical movement(even with a crowbar) but loads of sideways movement. Anyway, I changed the balljoint and low and behold it also solved my rear suspension swing/skip.
