There's something very strange going on there!
If it left the factory with a B230, it was one of the very first (i had an 87/E reg with a B23) but that's what is in there. As far as i've always been aware, the B230 came later (87/88) but either way, except for the plugs, ignore my suggestions for the HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm as they were for the B23 so won't fit. What model is it though - GL, GLE or what?

Its a GL, looking through the cars history its pretty unlikely the engine is not the original.

It's definitely unusual with that engine and the rear headrests, can you find anything in the history to indicate if it was a special order with options or perhaps an ex-Volvo fleet car or something of that ilk? Might even be an ex-factory prototype, wouldn't be the first time one or more prototypes has slipped inot general sale!

Looks like a B230K engine as plumbing looks the same. Don't know if they fitted 2 different carbs to the B230k, but mine had the pierberg 2B5.
I had a D reg 740 GLE estate with a B230K engine. 5 speed manual with a Pierberg 2B5 carb. D795RJW. This was an auto choke. Changed it to a Weber manual choke around a year later as was cutting out as diagnosed the Carb was the fault by Volvo dealer. Bought Weber conversion and independent garage installed it and still cutting out! Turned out it was the green fuel pump relay!! Volvo never admitted liability, but did refund the diagnostic fee! Mine had the painted steel wheels and chrome ring/hubs as the white car until I changed them to 240 Virgo alloys. James. Last edited by volvo always; Sep 27th, 2020 at 17:38. |
