Default Loss of power, cut out won’t start

Hi All,

New to the Volvo forums and on here looking for some advice and information.

Our vehicle: XC90 Mk2 2017 2.0L Diesel D4 (235hp) R-Design

So, my wife was on motorway, cruise control, 70mph and suddenly a loss of power and had to pull over where engine cut out. Managed to restart briefly and moved car to aid recovery. Engine cranks over but doesn’t start. Recovered to home but recovery guy pulled the codes.

This is what we had in the system:

P229000 - Injector Control Pressure (ICP) too low,General fault information, No
sub-type information

P22907B - Injector Control Pressure (ICP) too low,Mechanical faults,Low fluid
level

P133009 - Injector Control Pressure (IP) lower than desired (engine
running), General fault information, Component faults

P000400 - Fuel volume control valve circuit high, General fault information, No sub-
type information

So, as you can see possible injector fault, but trying to eliminate the mega expensive High Pressure Fuel pump (HPFP) 😵*💫

I have checked the fuel flow from the tank pump, checked the flow before the fuel filter, after the filter and at the HPFP. All the flows are equal so no leaks or blockages.
Now here’s the worry, the fuel pressure on the HP fuel rail (under cranking conditions) is 45psi. I can see this via the OBD2 app. I have also had a pressure gauge directly on the HPFP outlet and it recorded 45psi.

Does anyone know what the fuel rail pressure should be under cranking and normal idle? Can’t find any info anywhere!

Can anyone confirm the location of the fuel pressure sensor and flow control valve? I think the control valve is on the common fuel rail and the pressure sensor on the HIgh pressure pump.

Do the injectors have fuel pressure sensors in them?

Hope someone can shed some light.

Oh, I have checked all the fuses and all ok.

When you say “checked the fuel flow”. Did you check fuel was flowing or did you check fuel was flowing at the right fuel pressure?

Reading your post I thought of fuel starved injectors - so underperforming pump or fuel pressure regulator would be my initial checks…

Again, I’m new to Volvo’s but based on other cars I’ve owned…

Good Luck

DS

Thank you all for your post and help!
If something alike happens to your car, check the fuel pressure valves in high pressure pump and fuel rail. I could not remove the valve from fuel rail (extremely hard to remove) so I changed the fuel rail with valve included and problem fixed.
