Cold weather starting issue
Greetings forum!
Maybe some of you good folks can help me a bit with good advice... I have 2007 V50 2.0d, and in cold weather -5°C and colder the car will start a bit weird, cranking time may not be that longer, but engine runs rough for first 10s or so and rews jump a bit, like stalling and then gets going again... When warm or in warmer ambient temps it starts ok.. Sometimes there is a small air bubble in the transparent fuel hose but i dont think thats the problem. Also the intake tube with valves also seems ok, they dont stick or anything. Only thing the dealer said that glow plugs should be changed, so i assume no fault codes were registered, and after fitting new NGK glow plugs there was no change... Dont really want to take it to diesel specialist for injector test before exploring some other options... I filmed a video with the cold start- (https://youtu.be/KPoDwUIq3ZY) I will be happy to read your thoughts and suggestions and thank you in advance! Kind regards, a v50 owner |

It's quite normal for diesels to make that rattling sound briefly after cold start at low temps.
I'd recommend a block heater (Calix/Defa) to make the cold starts more comfortable for the car. Or you just maybe want to wait a minute or so to give time for the car idle to settle. In Finland the block heaters are widely used and in winter the temperatures can go below -30 Celcius. We still drive with diesels here and use arctic quality of diesel which withstands low temperatures. Here's an example of WV diesel cold start at -31C: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBf42egeH0g It starts just fine but idles quite rough at initial seconds. |

Hi Hoks, cannot see your video.
So i can just guess I have the same issue. Well maybe not. For me cold also mean standing for a while. What i noticed is that standing 2 hour at minus 10 is not a problem (no bubble got time to get in fuel system) but standing two days and then it's shaking like shakira's butt when starting ! I conclude that my problem is from air. Something like fuel is getting back in tank and air get inside fuel system, or something right before fuel filter not sure. Did you try to monitor that ? How does is start after 3 start in a raw ? Still get bubble and hard start ? Standing 1 hour, 5 hours, 2 days ? |
