I managed to CAUSE the ECM6805 instead of solve it, and the wife's not happy with me (on our 6th anniversary...)
I made an error in my reasoning and swapped the tubes on the solenoid around. And didn't do a test-run afterward So when the wife was late for the dentist this morning with the kids, she had a car going into limp mode, revving way too high, and being even slower than normal. (the Governer and vacuumpump are switched via the solenoid to atmospheric pressure above 1100rpm in this WRONG setup, whereas it should have been the engine-pads that are switched to atmospheric pressure). I think she likes me a little again once I remembered what probably caused this and made her swap them back again by phone. Finally putting her mechanical engineering degree to work This does prove however that despite the tube on the vacuumpump being 'loose' yesterday, it still produced a vacuum. It wasn't actually loose, it was still held in place by the curvature of the rubber vacuum tube, but it wasn't slid over the connector on the vacuum pump. Just sitting on top of it apparently still did the job though. Sorry for rambling so much, but I am finally getting some understanding in how this all works. I think the language barrier, the different terms used for the same products and the lack of engine/mechanical knowledge on my part make it hard for me to follow all steps that are taken sometimes, so I try to be very complete in my descriptions, hoping it will help someone else with the same limitations I have... |

18" is not exactly 18cm... DUH... SORRY, will recalculate everything to see if it makes sense then... Edit: then the 12" (-0.4bar) the system reached with everything hooked up will not be quite enough. As posted somewhere else, another issue I am having may be related to my brake booster (also vacuumleak?), so checking everything with my new-found knowledge will be on the to-do list. One engine-pad is clearly leaking (possibly due to the hole being too big for the plastic-plug that connects to the rubber hose), reducing this leak hasn't solved anything yet.

The Vac pump has two completely seperate pumping chambers - One is used for the brake servo and the other for the Turbo and engine mounts - There is no cross connection between the outputs..

Hi Mike,
I like all the others are suffering from the problem you have now solved, pleae can you reveal your solution, I will be going on holiday in 6.5 weeks and will be towing a trailer tent plus tons of other bits and peices, basically piled up like the clampets on the move I need to either repair my S80 or put a towbar on my wifes v40 1.6 which has no guts what so ever, but my only other alternative. Please can you help.

Mike's moved on by selling his Volvo (and even his Volvo specific code-reader, so he may be gone for good...)
His solution was to measure the vacuum and make sure all vacuumlines were OK, then apply vacuum with a handpump which solved his car's slow acceleration. Then he replaced the vacuum pump and all was well. My problem has not been solved yet, so not all problems or solutions will be the same... |

Help
Hi R-P
Thanks for the update, when / if I do actually find the fault, do I need to get the error code reset, or will it just run, only ask because volvo charged me £50 for the pleasure of finding this out. Cheers M Last edited by mgnaylor; Jun 7th, 2010 at 15:28. |

What faults do you have exactly?
They read out the ECM6805 code, charged you 50 quid and gave you no clue as to what is wrong? Then get a code-reader yourself. Mine (USB) was 40€, came with software, suck because it cannot read Volvo specific codes, but still would have done the same or more than your dealer did... I think in many cases this error will reset itself once the problem is gone. The code will be kept in memory for when someone reads out the 'old' codes. |

Do you think this could be the cause of the hesitation issue when pulling away some people have mentioned and which my car has never had? Your around town mpg now seems to be almost identical to mine now. Hope you're fully recovered now. All the best. Roy

Hi mike.
i am a new member..read your post and wondered can you help me sort my car lol.....i would sooner spend my money on someone who clearly knows what is going on than my local volvo garage! Just thought I would ask. my 02 s60 d5 se is really struggling! If not, no worries, keep up the good posts. Anyone know any good independents volvo specialists in Nottingham lol. Cheers A |
