Default 1989-1992 B230E Compression 9.5???

Hello All

I was wondering if anyone here might know if there is any significant difference between the Volvo 240 B230E engines produced by Volvo from 1985-1988 and those produced from 1989-1992.

The reason I am asking is that I have found a whole PDF stash of Haynes Automobile Technical Data for Volvos from 1985-1997 here:

http://volvo.ic.cz/haynes_pdf/Volvo.pdf

If you click on the 240 link, you will find that there are 2 versions of B230E listed, one from 1985-1988 and the other is from 1989 - 1992. The haynes data lists the compression ratios as 10.3:1 and 9.5:1 respectively.

Is the lower CR due to an extra headgasket fitted at the factory or did they actually modify the engine? Or... is the haynes data just pure bollocks?

Any information would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Default Engine compression

There may be other factors which lower or raise a compression other than simply fitting another head gasket. I've never seen a dual gasket fitted from factory. And your last statement on the Happy Haynes is mostly correct.

You may find the valves are slightly different or the pistons are different is a slight manner. Most of the engines will fit the later engine is purely a later engine and no difference to the earlier other than it may have had more bhp (can't find my old 240manual)

In the 240 range the B230E was, I think, only fitted to the GLT after 1989, and didn't that finish anyway by 1991. The SE had the B230F, to go with the catalytic convertor, don't know if it was used elsewhere, like in the last of the 740's.

Yes the GLT badge finished in 1991, however in some markets e.g. Malaysia, I can verify that the 240 SE was running B230E with K-Jetronic at least until 1992. Same beast, new name.

There were also SE models sold in Malaysia in 1993 as well as the SE Classic in 1994 but I cannot verify what engine was put in those as I dont personally know anyone who has those models in those years.
