Smile S40 loose rear bumper - is this dangerous? How do I fix it?

Hey guys,

I've just purchased an '03 S40 with 100k miles on it.
Really nice car and an enjoyable driving experience.

I've just noticed that the rear bumper is hanging a bit loose. It seems to be fastened in place, as it doesn't really move with either pushing or pulling, though it's still not sitting flush with the car visually.

Is this dangerous? I wouldn't want it to fall off at high speed.. Is this something that I can fix myself with limited car experience? Not sure if I'd need any specialized tools.

See video of bumper:

Really appreciate all inputs on this!

Nice looking car!

Is there any movement in the bumper? If it is anything like the front version, it is held in place by a series of plastic clips and it looks like these may not be fully clipped home. Perhaps something (wiring, perhaps?) has been caught between the plastic and the metal when the bumper has been put back on at some point. If there is movement at all in it, I would gently push it to see if it will click back in place.

I've had the front bumper off a couple of times, without doing the whole front end removal bit and it clips back with a decent jolt from the knee.

I'm sure other more expert will be along in a while to give you a more correct answer!

I would agree, clips.

Thanks!
From what I've seen there wasn't really much movement either way when I've looked at it earlier. But makes sense regarding wiring or other things being in the way. I'll have a more in depth look with a flashlight and see if I can determine why it's not going in!

Otherwise does anyone have instructions on how to take these off?

Looking at the video, it looks fine on the right, just the left is the issue. There will be a slight gap.

This should help on how to remove it http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...t=60021&page=2

The rear bumper is held on by 2 bolts on the boot, 14mm I think and 2 smaller ones in the side panels, 10mm. the some screws in the wheel arch.

The two side fixings are mounted to the bumper slides, and can pop out from the proper place, will make sence when you look at them, the two main bolts fix to the bumper bar and have plenty of movement so you would be best, loosen all the fixings, and jiggle things around till it lines up better, doing the bigger bolts up first, since will hold it in place best and make finer adjustments each side.

10 minutes fiddling around will get it all nice and neat again, takes more time getting the boot carpets out the bloody way to get to the bolts.

It might be worth looking through a guide I wrote earlier in the year, I had to swap my rear bumper - it'll show you where the bolts are etc.
