Thanks to all, for this thread. Had a petrol smell in the car when filling the tank right up, for a while - but usually not when only putting 30L in, only when filling to the top.
Today when refuelling there was fuel dripping from between the rear wheels while filling up (the driver behind me spotted it), but seemed to be flowing down to the centre from the driver's side.
Now I know what was probably the cause - and can get it looked at.

Had this problem and bought the parts off eBay and got my local garage to fit both hoses; he said they had to remove the smaller breather hose to get to the filler hose. Old filler hose had a split in it. They charged me 2 hours labour. I ran the fuel tank quite low before I took it in as I don't think they would want to deal with a full tank. Anyhow, put 50 litres in next day and all seems well.

sounds about right, my garage charged me £120 and I bunged him an extra £10 for a couple of beers as I knew it was a horrid job

I started noticing a petrol smell while filling up a while ago. This recently got worse but only ever leaked when filling the tank full, ie did not leak at other times. It seemed dangerous to have petrol leaking near the exhaust. Given what has been said here, I did not attempt this job myself and asked a Volvo garage to investigate. They replaced item 23 (the short bent flexible pipe held by two clips) in the assembly diagram above. This has solved it. Total cost £360. 2002 V70, 170k miles.

Turned out my leak was because there was a hole in the metal (aluminium) pipe between the filler cap and the tank. Not cheap to replace!

PS. if anyone's interested here's the offending part, once removed from the car:

The hole (not pictured) was a pinprick, but it still threw maybe 250-500ml of fuel on the ground while filling up.
