Cam belt change 2.4d
Hello all
Long time since posting but one question How on earth do you get the bolt off the timing belt cover without being a super contortionist. Is it easier to remove engine mounting. XC60 2010 2.4 d. Trying to do it right now. Coolant drained. This little bolt is eluding me. Even undone crank but. Help. |

Just to let anyone else know who might be thinking of a DIY timing belt and water pump change, think hard before taking it on. The engine mounting on the D5 has to come off as they are bolted through the timing cover. Long 8 and 10 mm sockets needed. The A/C pipe gets in the way for everything you do. If you are very dexterous then by all means carry on. For me I might think differently next time. Water pump is a pig to change as access is very limited. Two steel pipes get in the way. The YouTube video helps but that guy could drive a bus iin the room he has, in the XC 60 you have between 40 to 50 mm. Haynes manual does not cover all the problems you will encounter. Still not finished, in this very hot weather progress has been slow.

Hi , sorry no one else has reponded to the post yet. I dont have any specific advice as taking on the job you are, would make me pretty anxious.
Is it too late to put everything back and take it to a dealers? At least they will have the tools and experiance to do the job. If you get into any major trouble later on you will not be able to drive the car to a dealer to let them finish the job. "Bon courage " my engine bay frightens me !

Thanks for your concern, but it’s all done. Water pump had to come back out as it leaked. Gasket got twisted when installing. There really is not enough room to see what your doing. Two fuel pipes also in the way. But after making a new gasket out of a cereal box its all running fine. New coolant added at 50 50 mix with distilled water. All three belts now done. Together with 3 tyres it’s been an expensive month. Would love to change it out for a newer one but the R design is v pricey.

A long time ago I did the cambelt on my Impreza but wouldn't attempt it on the XC60 something for the dealers to handle with all the correct kit & experience.
