Default Redblock?

If it is a 4 cylinder redblock, then no, the water pump is not driven by the timing belt and easily accessible. No need to be touched during timing belt replacement.
Do not let them talk you into replacing the water pump, just because it is common to do so nowadays. If you are still on the original pump I would strongly suggest not to touch it as long as it is not leaking. Mine has done over 400K miles and has never been replaced. I understand the quality of the current replacement pumps is not the same.

Assuming this is the 960 white-block that his other thread is about. The timing belt change is not quite as straightforward as on a red-block - twin cam for starters. The engine is interference as well so personally I chickened out of doing it myself and got my local garage to do it.

I don't think there is any particular need to do the water pump as well if it's not leaking or noisy. However it is driven by the timing belt so I guess it all depends whether you have more faith in an original Volvo one or a modern replacement.

You need some kind of tool to operate the serpentine belt tensioner. Unless it has been replaced with an aftermarket one the original is too large for a 1/2" and too small for a 3/4". I suppose you could stuff something else in to make a 1/2" breaker bar work if you're desperate.

What about the tensioner and idler pulley, which comes in the timing belt kit, should they be replaced along with the timing belt ?

I would replace them if you have no belt history etc

It's 80k or 8 years on a N plate 960 for the belt. Not sure if tensioner is same intervals

You need to change the water pump at the same time, INA or Aisin. Belt kit Volvo or SKF, the tension does not need to replaced. The wheels for the AUX belt will likely need to be replaced
