Dpf cleaning
Just had my C30 60 plate R Design Diesel into Arnold Clark Volvo main dealer due to intermittent DPF warning code. They've cleaned and regenerated the filter (£297.00) . However during the 40 mile journey home the warning lamp has come back on twice (and gone back out again).
Needless to say I'm returning the car to them tomorrow as there is obviously still a problem, despite the car's performance being unaffected, but I am concerned where things are heading cost wise. If the cleaning has not been successful does anyone have any idea what replacing the filter will cost approximately and should the garage take into consideration what I've already paid out? Any other advice, experiences re. this will be gratefully received. |

Its a bit late now, but from my experience cleaning a DPF only delays the problem...
C30 replacement DPF from us is anything from £300 to £800 depending on the engine and if you want genuine Volvo DPF or not. We've replaced DPF's for customers for less than a professional DPF cleaning company has charged them to clean it! We've also replaced a number of 'cleaned' DPF's... What's the mileage and engine? if its got to the condition you got the warning light on I imagine it needs new DPF pressure sensor and pipework to go along with it? We get lots of issues with people not changing the DPF on time then when it finally goes it takes out the pressure sensor and the pipes are all burnt away, when changed on time usually you have no issues...usually... |

My car had a main dealer service at 105,500 about 6 weeks ago. It is a 2011 C30 DRIVe 1.6D. I asked them when the DPF would need changing and they looked it up and said that for my car there was no recommended specified mileage at which it should be replaced. Which given the issues one reads on here with DPFs seemed pretty strange.
It doesn't have the whatever its called stuff you put in the little tank that adds to the fuel with each fill. Sorry I'm vague about it but I don't know what it is called because my car doesn't need it. Why is this? Will it eventually fail? I do go on long 1-2 hour Mway type runs each way, at pace, at least once a month. Well not so much pace if the M25 is involved.

Second, the filter should have been replaced not cleaned. A brand new Volvo DPF costs little more than you paid to have it cleaned although you'd have labour to pay on top. I'd try to cut a deal with them where you pay for a new filter and they install it for nothing due to their failed cleaning efforts. I had a genuine Volvo DPF fitted for £550 all in. Hope that helps.

Sounds like your car is a 6 speed 8 valve 1.6d. If so, the dealer is correct. The DPF is designed to last the lifetime of the car.

The root cause of why you need a replacement DPF should be established otherwise you'll be replacing it again in short time. Usually due to only being used for local short journeys, an air leak downstream of the MAF causing over fuelling, injectors letting-by or blocked DPF pressure sensor pipes.

Did they reset the counter when they topped up the fluid? I believe as you have a "wet" system the DPF should be changed at 75K I think the "Dry" ones last the lifetime of the car, I fitted one from here http://www.cats2u.co.uk/ £150 and only took an hour, the new ones come with new metal pipes fitted (for the sensor) I believe the volvo ones you have to order the pipes separately. and have chosen to go that route now, with the car at 78k, ESSR warning message showing and diagnostics indicating the DPF is at fault. BM Catalysts deal through suppliers, and I was fortunate to find one locally. I've bought a DPF and CAT combined unit, plus a pressure pipe and fitting kit with small change out 0f £300. My local garage are fitting these parts for me on Tuesday. They reckon between 1 and 2 hours labour. We'll see how this works out, but I feel more confident replacing old parts with new and without the added complication of sending stuff away for a recon. |
