Engine swap....
Hi - now I have to admit to being stupid......
To be brief my 2002 V70 non-turbo 2.4 petrol has suffered engine failure - by the sounds of it the bottom end has disintegrated :-( it started knocking on start up - dare I say this - a couple of years ago - I knew this sounded 'endy' - the oil level good, correct grade, Volvo filter, regular change - so I turned up the radio.... I considered dropping sump but didn't - also at the time I didn't know there's a potential issue with oil pump seals? a cheap fix Anyway, the other day it clatters to a halt with 'oil pressure low-stop safely' message. The dilemma is new car or engine swap it is otherwise a good and well maintained (with genuine parts) car - and recently has had front suspension rebuilt, new timing belt, new alternator, engine/box mounts etc A replacement car - same engine, same year, same spec (SE) is cheap but the insurance company want 40% increase as the car is 'new to us' and we don't have the 'experience' in driving it!! And a few online insurance quotes reveal the same - all details the same but owned car from 2009 gives one figure and owned from 2016 a 40% higher one - it's mad!! So: 1) - pull engine, strip, repair - I don't think so 2) supplied recon - im not that rich enough to afford (quote of £2k) 3) 2nd hand - maybe best - any good suppliers?? 4) scrap it! I do have the tools and experience to tackle this with help - and better if anyone in Enfield has a two poster I can rent :-) And I assume I can take engine/box out from above as opposed to below with subframe (which I'd rather do, hence 2 poster) Any advise on a postcard please and you have my permission to laugh!! |

You're not the first to be in this pickle.
Whatever you put into the old car will not alter it's value. If anything a replacement motor devalues a car. Inevitably the job will uncover or cause other things to need replacing. That insurance thing is quite mad. Never heard of it before. Is it really true or do they think the car is brand new ? Around here a driving car like that fetches a grand or less and would be looking at a replacement car were it not for the insurance rubbish. What happens to those who change every year ? I'm sure others here could recommend a good breakers for a motor. |
