Default TDI Diesel Pump description

My 850 TDI estate is about due for timing belt(s) change. So I was surprised to see that the diesel pump belt system is not what I expected. (I go back away in time on diesels). Checking on here I discover it has probably Volvo's own dynamic timing system (as opposed to a VAG system which is what the engine "lump" is). So, being me, I need to know what is telling what to do and why - if possible.
I would really like to find a clear description of how this system all works before I c**k it up.
Also, any advice about how I can read the electronics - does anyone have advice as to how it can be hooked jn with a PC. What software might do that best.
And again, I also need to work on my other 850 TDI which is automatic with auto box faults so it would be helpful to have set-up and analysis software for both.
I believe both cars are absolute gems - provided the owner knows a bit about them. So, I would welcome some guidance.

Have a look at this post with links to the required pc cable and you will need Vol-FCR software to do the dynamic timing.

Thanks, hjdlatd, for your quick response. I had read that post but it did not really give me the description BUT helpful links there. Vol-FCR sounds as though it is a valuable tool, though, thanks.
