Oh, the shame of it!
Longish drive yesterday in The Beast (1986 GLE 760 estate, automatic ). Around 120 miles.
Newly sorted steering hydraulics fine. (New hose swaged onto metal ends by local hydraulic workshop: £14.91. N.B. Do not get assistant to start engine whilst under car, with HP tube disconnected from pump. However hot ATF fluid is quite a good solvent for years', no, decades' of oily underbody gunge.) Went to collect my wife from work. The Beast would not start. Electrics there, fuel, hot system, everything. Called out RAC (just resigning from AA, will elaborate on that later). Patrol promised in 45 minutes. Turned up in 40 minutes. Took exactly three nanoseconds in diagnosis: Idiot driver. Drive selector neither in 'Neutral' nor 'Park'. In mitigation it must be said that it's around twenty years since I last drove automatics. Well, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
