Default XC60 2015 d4 cut out on motorway.

Hi 2 weeks ago we bought ourselves a 2015 xc60 d4 2.4 AWD.

On Tuesday night my wife was coming home from work when the engine died. She's was traveling around 70mph and managed to coast to the hard shoulder.

All electronics were working. The car would crank but not fire up. RAC sent a flat bed to get the car home. When got home sounded like it had no fuel. 2 bars showed on the dash.

I put 8lt of fuel in but it still would not start. Got it towed to local garage who replaced the fuel filter with a new Volvo one. He managed to get it started using easy start blet it idle but it died shortly afterwards. Diagnostic showed low fuel pressure.

He's taking about replacing the fuel pressure regulator.

After researching the forum I'm thinking the intank pump has failed.

The car died at the top of a steep incline. My research leads me to believe the intank pump will run continually when the fuel level is low. And as the my wife was likely hammering up the hill the engine would have been demanding a lot of fuel.

Am I on the right track here?

We bought the car in Manchester and brought it back to Scotland. The dealer have been great. And have offered to cover the cost of the repair. Take the car back for a refund or exchange for another. Luckily it happened so soon after purchasing.

I love the car but wife has lost confidence after her experience and is aiming for the refund exchange option.

Any help would appreciated with regards to finding cuase regarding fault finding on the fuel pump.

it's either ran out of fuel or the pump wiring has burnt out quite common

Make sure fuel in car then refs two people one to crank car over other to knock underside of saddle tank drivers side

Regards

You don't need to hammer and tongs use palm of your hand when someone cawing it over hopefully that's your fault

Xc 60 don't have rail pressure sensor fault .
Give it a bash and let us no how you get on
Regards
It's also important to make sure the cem and dim on latest sw

The codes need to be read preferably with Vida or you are quessing with your wallet.

Well garage have confirmed a dead intank fuel pump. They tried as suggested the whack the tank method with no joy.

Seems as well the tank has to be romoved to replace the pump. You would think you could get access under the rear bench but sadly no.

So it's off with the rear axle. Propshat and exhaust to get the tank out.

Luckily car dealer are covering the cost and if they have asked the local garage to fully test the car before it comes back to us. If there are any further issues after the repair then they will take the car back and issue a refund.

Hopefully it's a straight forward job and we get back on the road asap.

Got the car back today.

New fuel in tank pump fitted along with modified wiring loom. Car driving well so far and no fault codes showing. Mechanic said once he had the old pump on the bench he managed to get it going by whacking it.

Dealer in manchester have covered all costs and provided a rental car whilst the XC60 was off the road. Delighted with the outcome and glad to have our car back.

Thanks for all the help.
