Meant to give a smoother ride and maintain the correct tyre pressure for a longer period of time than air. This is because Nitrogen molecules are bigger and heavier than air and will not 'escape' through the tyre wall as quickly [as air].

I'm sure a physicist (or ATS fitter!) will give you a more eloquent précis....but in a nutshell that's it.........I think!

I had it done on my previous car at circa £2.00 a corner but when checking the pressure a week or two later, it needed topping up. Maybe better for precision motoring (like F1 cars where every 100 th second counts) but wonder if it makes that much difference to an ordinary car.

Think the secret is just to check your tyre pressure once a week and top up with free supermarket forecourt air at Sainsbury's!

Sorry, should have just posted this link to begin with - http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice...-nitrogen.html

Costco have that as a feature....tyres there always filled with nitrogen.
Sounds a bit of a gimmick to me....

On our SMax we have a Tyrepal pressure cap thingy.....and it tells us the pressures have remained correct for at least 5 months now!

Given that air is around 80% nitrogen anyway, isn't the only potential benefit the removal of the potential negative impacts of water vapour?

also displaces oxygen which is said to have a detrimental effect on the tyre rubber.

Its just another way to charge the customer more.
The outside of the tyre seems to stand up to oxygen quite well
Tyre fitter explain phyics !!! Most of these monkeys dont even know their own job and need to be closely supervised to ensure that weights go on the inside of alloys not the outside

Nitrogen (rather than air) also prevents any potential corrosion occurring on the inside of the wheel as there is no oxygen to enable corrosion to take place.

Tiffers did a thing on 5th Gear about nitrogen tyres. They stay up longer ( no sniggering at the back now !!) as the molecules are larger. Don't have moisture in them, so don't change pressure as much when driven and made the grand total of diddly squat in a laptime test. General concensus is don't bother. My workshop has usually 40 bottles of the stuff, which I can use for free and cant be arsed to, just use the old air stuff al around us.
