Exclamation ECM codes

S40 2.0i Sport 2001 .
Engine management light on. Code has been read by volvo : ECM-0044.
Anyone have the list of Diagnotic codes and things to check for as per the volvo VADIS system.

Need to know what to look as with regards this fault. The technician said it could be a one of many things, I would like to check out some of these before I take the car in.

Thanks for any info.

I am sure the read out on the PC was ECM-0044. Emmissions high.
Is the P0044 code a generic odbII code?

OK got the info after getting info from Volvo VADIS technical CD.
Here is the DTC

Condition

The control module checks for misfiring during the first 1000 engine revolutions after starting. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-44 is stored if the control module registers a misfire which causes increased emissions.

Substitute value
-Fuel trim disabled
-Three-way catalytic converter (TWC) diagnostic disabled
-Knock retardation disabled
-Idle air trim adaptation is disabled
-Evaporative emission (EVAP) system operates at minimum.

Possible source

-Defective spark plugs, ignition cables, ignition coil or flywheel / pulse wheel
-Blocked / leaking injector
-Uneven compression
-Leakage between the cooling system and cylinders
-Moisture, flashover in the ignition system on HT side
-Intermittent open-circuit, intermittent short-circuit to ground, intermittent short-circuit to voltage supply, contact resistance or loose connection in the ignition system low-tension side, in the injector circuit or fuel pump (FP) circuit
-Fuel stoppage
-Water in the spark plug wells
-Contaminated fuel or incorrect fuel type
-Repeated cold starting where the engine coolant temperature (ECT) has not reached normal operating temperature between starts.

Fault symptom[s]
-Engine difficult to start
-The engine runs unevenly at idle or there are marked jerks in engine response when driving
-Poor performance
-High emissions.

I have checked all the items as above appart from ignition coil(unsure how to test, appart from resistance check which shows 1ohm on both coils) and can not see any problems.
There seems to be no connection or wiring problems.

Not sure where to go now.

The flywheel sensor seems OK but again can only check the voltage, I may get an oscilliscope to check the square wave.

Not sure how to check the fly wheel / pulse wheel, anyideas on how to do this?

I have checked the CTS which seems to be fine.
Also any ideas on what else the fault could be.

OK, got myself an OBD2 scanner. (ELM323 chip for the volvo)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN:IT&ih=016.
This gave me some more info.
Code P0301 cylinder #1 misfire.
After changing over plugs, coils, leads with no effect, last resort was to change over injectors.

After moving the injectors arround the fault code changed to P303 misfire on cylinder #3.

I can only assume that the misfire is a result of a badley spraying injector, I have checked the solenoid on all the injectors and they are fine.

Next is to use some injector cleaner, anyone have any experience on best ones to try?
If this does not work its an ultrasonic clean by someone in the area (grimsby).

PS I wouls advise any competant motor DIY to get themselves an ODB2 scan tool for any car 1996 onwards, saves a lot of money and time diagnosing faults. Dont bother paying for software there are lots of decent freebies out there.

Ok,
petrol added injector cleaner did not work.
Removed the injector today and had it flow checked and ultrasonically cleaned.
primary check 54cm2/minute with very poor spray pattern
after clean 50cm2/minute with good as new spray pattern.
Re installed injector and ran car up.
Did just the job, thinking of having all the injectors now cleaned, just to give the car a boost.

Thanks all.
PS anyone in the area need a code read just drop me a line
