Default Hi All

Thanks for the input to date. I am no further forward at the moment except that now when driving the car will not change gear. The metallic clicking sound is still there when you first drive away and then disappears. I think that this is going to cost. The car has 105,000 on the clock and has performed like a dream until now. No warning lights showing and no advisers showing.
In the past I normally have no problem sorting out the causes on my previous Volvo's but this is getting me.
Thanks for the advise to date. Cheers

Hi Greg
It's been a while since I was here, I took your advice and took the car to a garage. The guy comes recommended so. He took it for a drive and found no problem with the gears, then did a diagnostic check. found some issues, cleared them and took the car again for a test. So far all seems ok, except for the loud 'roaring' sound when driving. this disappears when you take your foot off the pedal. So current thoughts are possible transfer box or gear box. but no clear indicator. Hopefully will know more soon. thanks for the input to date.

Default Hi All

Just an update on the 'noise under the bonnet'. It has now been to a gearbox specialist who has said that it almost certainly is not gear box/transfer box related. The thoughts are now that as the noise is only when you accelerate it could be turbo related, possibly a split pipe. I await more info.
Cheers to all
Keith

A split pipe will normally log error codes. And result in overfuelling. And result in extra soot. And result in rapidly filling up the DPF soot filter.
Needs fixing pronto.

A petrol does not have a soot filter ( DPF ) Diesel Particulate Filter.

The ticking noise - check your prop shaft apparently when the bearing go in the coupling by the transfer box you can hear a ticking noise.

Check on Youtube and search some videos about prop shafts and bearings see if that is your noise.

Default Noise under the bonnet

Hi All, Well not a good start to the year. The noise was still there but today driving the steering started to vibrate, slowed down and then one horrendous screeching sound. stopped the car and then lost all drive. engine ok but no power. called out RAC who transported it to a garage, the driver commented that it might be the gearbox. So here we are waiting to see next week what is the prognosis. Thanks to all with the advice based on the limited information I gave. Hopefully my xc90 will be able to be saved.

Cheers
