What diesel to have??
Hi all.
I am looking for a new used volvo. Coming from an 850 t5. Now going for an end second or begin third generation V70 diesel. For the second generation its quite clear what engine can do what. But the third generation went bonkers with choice of diesels.. So much different ones! I tried to google which is the best to have. But mostly found not to take the 1.6. And there is a twin turbo to avoid. But didnt get further. So i would really like to know, which is the one to have? Thanks!! |

I have the twin turbo D5 [215] (2011 facelift) no turbo problems to report here. Service myself and only use 0w30 castrol edge as directed in the book, no additional additives or anything. I do service every 10,000 miles as I do alot of town driving with work and I also tow a caravan. I get all my bits from volvo because with the discount it works out about the same as my local motor factors.

why avoid the twinturbo?
personally I prefer the 5 cylinders engines, 2.0 or 2.4 |

I have a 2013 D4, 2.0 5 Cylinder 163Bhp,
Plenty of power, over 50mpg combined over the past 10k miles (Calculated) and £30 a year tax, Best engine choice in my opinion. I genuinely can't fault it in the V70 at all. Terry |

If you're considering an older diesel I guess you're not too fussy about emissions/ environmental concerns. The 163 bhp D5 has no DPF so no DPF recirculation problems either - down side is all the extra crap you're adding to the atmosphere. If you're worried about the lower power over the later D5s with 182 or thereabouts I wouldn't be. My XC70 weighs about 6 elephants and has shed loads of torque - can also be remapped straightforwardly. No contest really. |

nothing to do with the turbocharger/s if the head gasket fails , They are very robust head gaskets , something else would cause the problem like cracked cylinder liners perhaps ?
