Default Economy Remap?

Hi,

A few years ago I had a 2.4 S80 D5 with the 163bhp which regularly returned 50 - 55 mpg on a run.

A couple of months ago I bought a 2008 S60 hoping for the same mpg, especially as its a smaller car. What I didn't realise at the time was I actually bought one with the 185bhp engine which only returns 40 - 45mpg.

Yes it goes well and is much quicker than my old S80, but I'm not really interested in the power I would much prefer a better mpg even at the cost of losing some of that power.

It made me wonder, if any of you tech guys out there did a special remap that could give me 10% (or more) better mpg - dont mind losing some power? I'm a steady driver but I do lots of long distance runs and would rather have the economy.

Can anyone help or suggest someone?

Many thanks.

Thanks for your reply, - regarding the 'light foot', thats a given, I always drive lightly! That's the reason I dont mind losing some power if I can get an economy remap. No one yet has actually come up yet with a suggestions as to where or who to go to though.

Any remap company near you can remap for what you require.

The standard maps are as economical as they can get them , Volvo needs to keep emissions down to the lowest levels possible to comply with regulations ...

Set your fuel computer to Instantaneous MPG and it will show you where the fuel is going when you see it dip below 20 mpg .... and you never go above 60 mph? That's the way for economy ...

I'm afraid you have baught the wrong car.

As newer models have come along they have become more powerful and less economic, a lot is to do with emissions compliance.

My 1999 P1 v70 regularly gave me 45 around the doors and 53 on the motorway.
My 2010 P3 gives me 40 around the doors and 48 on the motorway.

I belive the most economical D5 was the 163 bhp pre dpf model.

Considering the size of car and comfort available your fuel consumption is not so bad. In comparison a petrol cavalier will give the same consumption and I know which I would rather drive.

The polestar optimisation is alleged to enable a better fuel consumption to be achieved, I have never found it so and it's been on my car for 6 years.

I belive Celtic Tuning can do an economy tune but you risk it being overwritten at service time if done at a Volvo dealer. My information comes from a bmw owning mate who tells Celtic can do volvos, I have no direct experiance of them.

Paul.

MTE & Shark Performance are well regarded tuners.
MTE - reach out to Don@KalmarUnion (can be slow to respond)
Shark Performance are based in Mansfield and you can google their number.

Whilst every tom dick and harry these days thinks they are a mapper, its actually a skill and what you want is someone like the above, who has the know how on how to do it right rather than some muppet who will slowly kill your car.

I have had a MTE stage 1 remap on my S70R auto since 2013 and that's running 100% awesome to this day and its used daily. How many other remapped cars last this long before owners complain of failures and problems and the car ends up being stripped down for parts?

Shark Performance closed down a while ago now, BD Performance I think aquired some of their maps.

You want to get in touch with Tim Williams or Shemtek Automotive for reputable Volvo mappers, as they might be able to help or point you in the right direction (But they are more performance)

+1 on what clan mentioned, cars are designed to be as economical as they car be so just keeping it standard would most likely be your best bet or you might find that your car will get mapped and your mpg drops.

Even with a economy map you may only gain a few mpg and it would probably take a few years of real world driving before you even start to see any return.

I'm afraid you've just got the wrong car all together.

Volvo's are big, heavy cars with bigger engines.

If you want economy, buy a fiesta of a newer Focus estate with a 1.0 3 pot engine.
