Volvo's are big, heavy cars with bigger engines.

If you want economy, buy a fiesta of a newer Focus estate with a 1.0 3 pot engine.
or a pre 2005 v70 D5 :-)

One is without a DPF the other is with a DPF. DPF equipped cars consume more fuel.

One thing I suggest is checking the air filter. I have an EU5 D3 S60, the fuel consumption is heavily influenced by how clean the air filter is. A dirty air filter and it will not do 40mpg, clean filter will easily crack 50mpg.

If power really isn't an issue, could it be worth looking at the smaller engined S80s?

The P3 came with the 2.0d and (I think) the 1.6d PSA engines. I'd expect the 1.6 to struggle with the size of car though.

If you would prefer a 5 pot and Volvo build, look slightly newer at the D3. My S60 D3 is admittedly smaller and manual, but the 136bhp/£30 tax version, on a gentle motorway run it can push 70mpg on the computer. When I do a long drive like that I always end up using the rest of the tank on the hills of Cumbria, so I never get to do a full brim to brim calculation, as the roads here make it drink fuel.
