Default Yet another suspension question.

Hi folks. The bits arrived today for me to check the top nut on the suspension today. The nut is about as tight as it would go, so the clanging I've got isn't that.

But.... If I put a spanner on the top nut I can turn one side (noisy side) completely round. The other can only be turned a small amount. Any guesses?

I should say that the noise isn't too bad. I live on a fairy rough single track road and the noise is mainly present on this. It isn't potholes but more a rough undulating surface which cases it to be noisy. It's fine on A roads, etc.

Got to drive to Paris on a couple of weeks so would like to have it sorted by then.

I've already changed the anti roll bar end links which did help but hadn't cured it.

First question.
Is the rod of the shock absorber on which the nut is threaded turning with the nut?

I shall have a look now. Just been talking to a volvo garage about a service and he recons it's the top mount.

Just noticed that if I put my hand on it, I can push the whole thing down.

Tighten the nut on the shock rod.
If using a spanner, you'll need a 7mm Allen counterhold on the shock rod to achieve this.
Using an impact wrench on the nut will usually mean it can be tightened in a couple of seconds without needing a counterhold.

I'm positive you shouldn't be able to push the top of the strut down with your hand. Something is broken (spring?) or not tight enough.

Best of luck
