You learn something every day! My first 850 had all the same 'side' Columba wheels - I always thought it looked strange, but was assured at the time that there was only one 'side' - and that was the Sheffield dealership!

What a great thread and lovely car. Looking forward to more updates. Reminds me of how I enjoyed doing my threads of my old 240 (Tank) & 850 (Zeb). Lost years worth of pictures when Photobucket, with no warning pulled the plug on free accounts

I sort of started one on my current T5, but have let it slide...........

I might have to update it now having seen this great story.

Keep it coming.

Regards

Definitely, we all love reading about what other owners are doing to/with their cars

This whole wheels facing different directions thing is going to bug me! Is it worth paying for wheels and tyres to be swapped? I think I'll continue with getting the car back to proper health first and try to ignore this issue ha

Thanks Paul, very kind words indeed. I personally very much enjoy reading other people's threads to see their progress. Also, quite often they can can inspire action or provoke a need or a want which is good. Get yours updated!

So today's update? Lambda/Engine management light issue sorted with a replacement sensor. That's the good news.

"But what's the bad news?" I hear you all say...

It failed the glove test...yep, the PCV must be blocked and need replacing. I first did the dipstick test at temperature and a steady steam train like amount of smoke came through but I wanted to be totally sure so did a glove test and pretty quick I got the full fingers up from the glove.

So I've been looking to find a kit...and if I'm honest I'm failing to find one for my car which is a 10v non turbo. I tried looking on Skandix and PFS but with no joy. Should I try a local dealer perhaps? I'm going to see my local mechanic today so will ask him about it too, but I should imagine he'd have the same issue as me. I would quite like to do the work myself...however I am not a mechanic. I have a logical brain and equipped with arms, legs, eyes and youtube plus plenty of tools so in theory I should be OK I just want to know I have everything I will need before I start. Any suggestions on sourcing them welcome

Great news about the O2 sensor - which one did you use? OEM was Bosch but I've also successfully used NTK sensors.

Re the PCV kit, while I can't see a kit listed, PFV do list non turbo parts for the PCV service. If you can PM me your VIN I'll try and get a parts list from my VIDA for you. I say 'try' as its a bit temperamental and keeps crashing lol.

The PCV replacement is very much a DIY job. Just take lots of pics on your phone so that you can check the routing of cables, hoses etc. And don't forget to put the vacuum hose on the intake manifold before you re-fit the manifold RobertDIY (as usual) has a good video on this job, it'll take you a morning if you take it easy and have a few coffee breaks.

You might also be interested in this modification to the PCV system using 5/8" heater hose - https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/fo...ic.php?t=53448 Its something I'll be doing shortly.

Finally, while you're rummaging around the gearbox end of the engine, check the vacuum hoses for perishing. If they haven't been replaced there is a very strong chance that most of them will be showing advanced degradation. They can be replaced with 5mm internal diameter thick walled/reinforced silicon vacuum hose which also has the advantage of eliminating those rubber elbow joints that crack.

Pretty sure it was an NGK item - seems to have done the trick which is good, one thing ticked off the list anyway.

Thank you for the info on the PCV job, much appreciated. I have watched a few videos on the subject on youtube already and in one of the videos (incidentally an identical engine to mine), the person forgot to reconnect something which I assume is what you're referring to.

I just popped into my local Volvo dealer and am now awaiting prices and, more worryingly, availability. I was hoping for a kit so that I didn't need to say which bits I need as I don't know, so let's see what they say. I suppose I can clean and re-use certain bits if absolutely necessary, but that depends on condition.

Thanks for the additional info too, will check those out.

There was a guy called RUFE on here when I was previously an active member and he was amazing and could get anything, unfortunately it seems he's gone

RUFE was Simon, who worked at FRF in Swansea - he was the one who actually started the club discount scheme. He was indeed very very helpful. Sadly, you can only contact FRF via telephone these days, and there is usually quite a long wait to speak to them

I'd recommend you call Caffyns (Eastbourne main dealer) and speak with Chris Gander - he has been as good as Simon was, and his pricing is very keen Telephone 01323 418318 He is my first port of call these days

There's a club discount? Intriguing. I shall wait for the quote/information from my local dealer then will give this FRF place a call then and see what they say. Thanks for the heads up
