Brake disk/OEM wheel alignment bolt
Is this bolt just an OEM wheel alignment adjustment aid?
Just bought a set of aftermarket wheels for my C70, they don't have a recess for the disk bolt, is it OK to discard these? Obviously, once the wheels are on, the disk is secured and aligned by the wheel bolts.

No it is not just an alignment bolt. Volvo hub-balances its wheels, so whilst that bolt is used to align the wheel it does that for the purpose of maintaining balance and reducing vibration and wobble.

So, is the wheel hub and disk balanced? I understand wheels balanced at the factory may take into consideration the offset bolt but once you change the tyres, the balancing wouldnt take the bolt into count.

That's not the original bolt/pin
Should be like the image below and there should be a single hole in the wheel to align it in the correct location. If your aftermarket wheel doesn't have a locating hole then remove the bolt, but be prepared for the disc to spin round when you are fitting the wheel onto the hub

Tony, My C70 is the same as yours with a normal hexagon head setscrew. The car is absolutely standard and only serviced by Volvo before I bought it so have no reason to believe it did not leave the factory with those set screws. All four hubs are the same.
The original Comets do not have a locating hole, just a massive recess between each lug.

Looks like a feature volvo did away with. I have Cratos wheels on my C70 and Tethys on my V70, neither designs have the hole for the pin.

My V70 has the pin, which I could see as relevant if you had the wheels balanced on the car and kept them in the same corners, but if you move the wheel then you'd have to have the whole lot rebalanced, but then I have my wheels/tyres balanced individually and the discs I bought were also balanced individually*. On other cars I've had the disc is held in place with a countersunk cross headed screw/bolt, in the OP's case he could pop the disc off countersink the hole and replace the bolt (cut the replacement short so it won't foul on anything behind the disc), with the wheel fitted the wheel bolts will do infinitely more to keep the wheel and disc in place.
*edit, and I've just noticed there are 5 holes in the OP's disc that the bolt could go in so it doesn't restrict the fitting at all.

My 92 240 had the pins. The Virgo wheels had a recess for them. The steels have a close fitting round hole for the pins. Anyone here got steels on? My take is that it's so a balanced wheel can go back on the car in the same place each time it's removed. That amount of weight near the centre would make very little difference to overall balance.
