Engine Oil
That 'Old Chestnut' of Choice of Engine Oil!
B5254S - 2.5ltr - 20v - 170bhp - non-turbo - auto - 145,000 miles I have searched the forum but cannot find this topic, but it has no doubt been raised before. The original spec was 10W/40 or 15W/50 multi-grade : I have been running on quality 5W30 Fully Synthetic for many years, Ford / GM spec which is no longer available to myself (was from a mechanic friend's bulk trade drum). What readily available engine oils do you recommend, 5W/30, 5W/40. I am considering Castrol Edge 5W40 Titanium Fully Synthetic and Mobil Super 3000 X1 Formula FE 5W/30. Many Thanks! Shell helix 10/40 semi synthetic.I run all my P80's diesel and petrol on this and all on intergalactic mileage over a 23year period.
Fully Synthetic is a bit of an overkill on these in all honesty as they all date from a time before fancy oil. Change it at 6k and all is well. All on original engines and turbo's highest mileage one is 380K. |

5w40 or 10w40 be fine. Not much difference in price these days between 5w40 and 10w40, so you would be better using 5w40 for better cold flow, higher oxidisation resistance, better additives (if a decent brand) etc. A good one would be Fuchs Titan Supersyn, at £22 5L, a decent additive pack, made by a top company, its ideal for an older engine design. Your other good option is Shell helix ultra 5w40 which is also cost effective.
Unless you are changing every 8k its best to buy premium oil, which needn't be expensive as above. |

Looking through the service history and invoices of my car it’s always had 10W-40 ever since its very first service at Volvo so that’s what I’ve put into mine

Thank you all for your kind help and opinions, greatly appreciated. I thought you would like to know what I decided to do.
I have used Genuine Volvo Fully Synthetic 5W-40 Oil, part number 1161631, 4 litres Cost about £28.00. I bought two of them although they also have 1 litre bottles but pro-rata more expensive. My reasoning was this: The engine was originally built and specified for 10W-40 (or 15W-50). It has been using 5W-30 Ford specification fully synthetic oil for about 20 years. I therefore decided to stay with fully synthetic, stay with 5W for better cold start protection but change to correct 40 hot for slightly 'thicker' hot running oil as the engine was designed for. The Volvo oil is great value, cheaper than most of the branded Shell, Mobil, Castrol oils. The rear label on the Volvo Can reads: "A fully synthetic engine oil of the highest quality. Extremely good low and high temperature characteristics. This oil reduces fuel consumption. Intended for diesel and petrol engines with or without Turbochargers. Especially recommended for engines with Turbochargers. Recommended for use in the 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 and 900 series, S/V40, S/V70, S60, V70, S80 and XC90." |
