They are pretty resilient Steve.
Way back in about 2003, I swung into the car park at work having been hammering the car all the way there, turned off the radio to only the hear the hissing/boiling noise and looked down to see the coolant temperature waaay past the red
Got towed home after work, turns out one of the heater hoses had worn through where they rubbed. Fixed with a length of copper pipe spliced in and car did another 80k!

Continuing Lukes storys of car chaos at the moment, I was on my way back from Gloucester on Wednesday last week just going up the hill before Gordano services when the engine note suddenly changed along with the appearance of a loud clicking/clacking noise related to engine speed.
Pulled into the services and had a poke around but my directional hearing is so useless that I couldn't really tell where it was coming from with the rest of the noise that engine makes.
On the basis it still had oil and coolant and didn't gave a massive hole in the block I said "**** it let's get her home" and cautiously drove the remaining 30 miles at 55. Oddly it didn't sound so bad when I got home.
Circumstances (dose of the flu that came on that night and put me in bed till yesterday) mean that I haven't been able to investigate it yet, and its had to be driven a further 10 miles each day.
Given the history I was initially fearing something in the head had finally given up, but it's running on all four and drives OK, just noisy! I'm hoping perhaps exhaust gaskets.

I have a 1996 940 LPT and one day expect the HG to go due to age/ different metals and 210,000 miles.
Of no further use to this topic, but before I got my 940 LPT the HG was replaced by a Volvo workshop at 100K miles (owned by lease company, valve shims below Volvo spec due to LPG). I took it over 10K miles later and thought the same about the HG. 23 years and 340K miles later it is still running on the same HG though. I think going easy during warming up has paid out.

Steve, I do hope things are not as bad as they seem right now. The redblock is a tough piece of machinery and the smaller bore of a 2 ltr might even be an advantage for the HG. If you have things running again (which I am sure you will have), I would invest in a new expansion tank with a low level sensor. Connected to a (red!) light in the instrument panel and it will not happen again...!

That doesn't look a bad motor for a grand, 'Offgrid', nice colour too. Not just for the engine, but a useful source of spares to use or to sell if Steve had the room to keep it as a donor car. Alternatively, could be pressed into service as a reliable runner if the advisories were attended to.

Regards, John.

Why does it always seem to be women that ignore warning signs or anything to do with an engine?

So…… source of leak identified, ahem…. Bottom hose not on radiator stub, hoseclamp hanging on stub!!!

May need to raise one’s hand for numpty schoolboy error, as it could only have been me missing tightening the clamp when I replaced the radiator and hoses back in April’23 🙄

Turning over by hand, and it turns over but it does feel as though there is a point where it needs more effort, also some rather disconcerting sounds that seem to be a scraping sort of noise, although with the ratchet click and belts making a noise it is hard to be definitive.

Hmmm, oh well, only one way to find out I suppose…..err no start, turns over but not a hint of firing…….

Now just got to decide where to go from here??

Cheers
Steve

Default Mil

I believe the MIL came on as the engine stopped (I won't use the word "seized"...). I do not see a direct relation with the overheating, other than the isolation of a wire or wire loom might have melted somewhere. I suggest to check around the engine block.

Dont whip yourself. I cant imagine how it has gone from April last year to now with out the clip being tightened to some degree. You would have noticed low coolant and coolant under the car for sure. Definitely the hose would have blown off before now, probably, the first time it made temperature after the hose was connected.
Downside to this of course is that it has made enough pressure to blow it off so something not right.

Overheating can affect both fuel and ignition systems, as already mentioned. As the head gasket is also a likely casualty which, if seriously leaking, could affect the engine starting it might be worth doing a compression test early in your troubleshooting.

Quite a good, if old, video explaining how to do this here if not already familiar to you.
