Hi, I've seen a tow-car with a mirror attached to the rear to help with solo positioning over the tow hitch. Anybody have info on this. The one I saw was not a bodge up but specifically designed for the job.

Default tape it

you can always use reference points.
have a dot sticker in your rear window and a sticker on the locker of your van.
set the car up with it positioned under the hitch of the a-frame and note how much of the van you can see from the rear window, add a sticker to the side of the rear window.
You should now have reference pts for alignment and distance.

or buy a motor mover!

Was it a Jap import as a lot of them have a mirror at the rear looking down. I had always wondered why, now I know. Thanks.

Hi there,

Am I right in thinking during the 80's there was one of those people carrier things (when they first came out), definitely Asian/Japanese with some 'space age' name (like Mitsubishi Star Defender or something ridiculous) that had a mirror like this fitted as standard - but to actually help the driver park the thing?

I wonder whether you could still pick one up from somewhere if you wanted one?

The other alternative, so not to drill mirror mounting holes in your car, is to mount a vertical pole on the caravan 'A' frame with (by clamping round the 'A' frame) with the mirror mounted on that, looking down to the hitch.
This method is OK if you are only towing the same vehicle al the time, no good it you tow a variety or trailers.

But in doing this you may invalidate the certification for the frame of the caravan/trailer you are towing..
Need to be very careful when making changes like this..

The alternative may be a mirror on a rubber sucker.
Can be easily attached and removed when required...

Des. . . ;(

Des,

Its OK If you only clamp round the existing 'A' frame. It is when you drill holes through the steel that you invalidate the makers type class, and warranty, that's why the spare wheel carrier holes are all predrilled, and all the towing stabilisers all just clamp onto the 'A' frame.

The mirrors on imports are for parking, basically they let you see how close the rear bumper is to the car behind etc. A much simpler and more foolproof version of a parking sensor.

If you wanted to fit one on an estate it would be easy. You can buy a kerb mirror from an HGV dealer. (the ones trucks over 7.5t have on the passenger door looking down.) Hell you could even get a genuine Volvo one.
