Thanks for your comments, but oh that one could rely upon what the 'professionals' say: I have a number of older cars and have been given some incredible advice on tyres by people who do it for a living. I have found that comments from enthusiasts who have actually lived with their decisions are frequently much more accurate and informative — thus the value of lists like this one!

Yes, thanks again. I have 5.5" alloy wheels (Volvo) and have to say that the aging 185/65% Continentals look as if they could stand an extra 10mm without fouling anything. The only conditions I can cause them to rub anything (front or back) is when the front of the car is fully jacked up, the inside walls can be just persuaded to touch the front anti-roll bar.
