Bent my wheel :(
Some idiot in a white pickup came towards me in the middle of the road, he realised what he was doing and swerved to move back to his own side but that meant I had to go close to the edge and into a pothole.
The pothole was big enough to make a bang when I went in and when I went out. Instant flat tyre although the tyre was structurally sound it wouldn't hold any air due to the wheel being bent in, in two places So first of all how do I find out what type of alloy I have? They're original 2004 SE 16" Alloys 7 spoke. I'm guessing a repair isn't really an option? |

Photos attached - From scanning through ebay I think the wheel is a CALIGO - Does that look right?

This is the pothole (circled red) - I managed to miss the bigger first one but hit the second, which although smaller had a harsher edge to it.
There is a 2nd hand Caligo alloy on ebay so if it is the same then it might just be easier to order, fit and forget! The wheel is £75. Might need a new tyre as well though. There is no cuts or slashes but I guess it could well be damaged. |

Woah that's one pot hole! it's normally recommended to change the tyre as you don't know how the inner structure has been compromised, it could later develop a weakness, a bulge and then blow-out maybe.
Definitely claim against the council on that I'd say, and you may find they insist you get a brand-new wheel and tyre. I can't see the council being held accountable for motorists running around on ebay seconds to reduce the claim costs. Please report back.

I'd be very very surprised if you can claim the council for a pothole that isn't on the carriageway - it's hard enough when the hole is in the road surface!

Usually the highway extends for 1m either side of the tarmac roadway. Its a common problem in rural Lincolnshire where I live, the sides of the road crumble and fall away because of vehicles pulling into the edge to pass.

this bit of road is wide enough for two vehicles to pass by the looks of it, just the op had some **** to contend with, I'm pretty sure a council will say they don't have to deal with potholes in the verge since you shouldn't be driving in them

If you think the position of that pothole is questionable, try and find one thats more in the road to take a pic of. they won't be able to prove it's not the one you damaged your wheel in! I have just purchased a whole set of new wheels dropping down to 17" from the original 18"s because i was wrecking tyres and damaging the rims so often on the crappy roads in Sussex!
