S80 D4 ATF dipstick?
Hi, friend has a 13 plate S80 D4 auto. Its a bit snatchy on gearchanges so I am going to flush/renew gearbox. Is there a dipstick somewhere? I can hardly see the gearbox as there is so much engine in the way. 🤣
Cheers

I think that your friend's car will have the Aisin Warner TF-80SC automatic gearbox. This gearbox has no dipstick. The inner section of the drain plug incorporates a leveling tube which overflows when the correct level is reached.
Plenty of video how-to's on YouTube.

This isn't a put down but the fact you've had to come ask says you should wide berth this job, it's not as simple as it sounds and you could end up losing a mate over it if all of a sudden it won't go into gear afterwards.
Having said that if you do go ahead this is the process... Check if it has a filter or not, I've a feeling it doesn't but look it up anyway simple way is to ring Volvo parts and ask for a filter price, if they can't find it it doesn't have one. Next ensure you get the correct oil and amounts of oil you need, to do this you need to flush run it at least twice and up to as many times as five. Have the car level and in the air and dump as much oil as possible and then measure how much came out, bottle it and set it aside to go to the recycling centre. iirc the drain plug is 2 pieces, one is the outer nut and the other an inner tube which does the measuring for you and also unscrews. Refilling might have a hole in the top of the box, if not you pump it in through the drain hole using gravity and bottle squeezing through a long hose. think you holding the bottle attached to a clear hose that goes down past the rad and u bends up into the drain hole minding not to foul on the inner workings and making a little sideways kink helps in the hose, think getting the hose that goes inside as horizontal as possible unless you can source an adaptor that screws to the drain hole. Reinstall the level tube and then refill until you get oil coming back out. Replace the level tube. You may want to check when to replace it before or after filling cos I can't remember exactly right now. when it starts running back out put the drain plug back in. Again double check this as again I can't remember exactly. Warm the car up while running through all the gears stationary allowing a 5 second pause between them, remember to hold the brake pedal down. If you have Vida monitor the oil temps until they get to ?? you'll have to look that up as again I can't remember exactly. Once warm with the engine running and when Vida says so or you are confident it's full warmed up get under again and remove the drain plug only *not the level tube* and top up until oil flows back out again, replace the plug and do the gears thing again. Under again and drain plug only out and by now you should have a residual oil flow coming back out, if not top up and repeat until you do. Bolt everything back up and test drive, hth. |
